Fire Mission. Last remnant of Winterland. Penalty Box Sign.
Billy Madison on the STLToday Blues forum said he went by the old Blues practice rink Winterland in Bridgeton today and the Penalty Box bar out front is now some sort of appliance store. Definitely gone (although the sign for the plaza still has "Penalty Box" at the top of it). They're ripping down all of our old stomping grounds so we have a fire mission.
You'll prolly need a lift of some sort or some tall Lurch type to reach the sign. Take some tools but don't bust the sign up please. If you gotta use a welder or blow it in place I don't want it. Also consider ramming the pole and knocking it over and taking the whole freakin thing to work on back in your hide out of sight of the coppers.
It's on the Rock Road, north side just west of Fee Fee Rd. Lat/Long 38.741549, -90.405516

Holy shit, just went street view on Google maps and it ain't even the original sign, just some generic sign there now.
Nevermind.

The ole place, sigh.

I had to fight to get in there for 5 minutes !
lol, All kinds of boxes out there.
Who remembers playing “Hot Box” as a kid? It wasn’t dirty, just clean fun after school.

I've ridden/driven past that place for ages.
Had no idea there was once a rink over there.
Winterland was hockey central if the Blues were not playing at the old barn
The Blues and visiting teams practiced there and we spent many days skipping school just down the Rock Rd to watch them play. When there was no hockey to watch or players to bug for broken sticks we’d put ash trays under the pinball machine legs to jip the machines and play all day. For some reason the truant officers, Harpole and Langley, never checked the ice rink for delinquents like they did Red Pin or Skylark bowling alley or Northwest Plaza. Winterland sat back off the Rock Rd where that library bldg is now overlooking I-70. Many of us got our first goal and first kiss under the bleachers at that rink, it holds a special place in our hearts. The brawls were legendary in the Sr Men’s and Ritenour HS games. The old saying was “whether on the ice or in the stands, you had a good chance of going home with a shiner at Winterland”.
