RIVERMEN DROP A PAIR IN B.C.
The Peoria Rivermen are off to a very rocky start in the 2012-13 AHL season. Team defense has been shaky, and scoring from the expected sources has been nonexistent as the Rivs were smoked in a weekend series in Abbotsford. Friday's season opener saw Jake Allen give up four goals on 14 shots in two periods before giving way to St. Louis native Mike McKenna in the third period of a 401 loss, and Allen gave up another six goals on 33 shots against on Saturday night as the Heat scorched Dave Allison's troops by a 6-2 score.
Ten goals allowed in two games, on just 49 total shots against, translates to a team GAA of 5.00 and a save percentage of 79.6%.
The news is not all gloom and doom for the Rivermen, however. Fourth-year pro Anthony Peluso (160th overall, 2007) attended a training camp hosted by former NHL star Gary Roberts over the summer, and has bulked up to an imposing 6' 4 and 236 pounds while losing 12% body fat. His hard work has paid off in the early going, as he has two of Peoria's three total goals scored this season to date. Russian import and 2009 draftee (78th overall) Sergei Andronov has the other.
Through their AHL history, the Rivermen have 39 wins in 54 games against Calgary Flames farm clubs in Omaha, Quad Cities, and Abbotsford. The Rivs will not see this Western Conference foe again in British Columbia during the regular season, and will next feel the Heat on New Years' Eve at Carver Arena.

ROUGH START FOR KARPOWICH AND ICEMEN, TOO:
2008 draftee (185th overall) Paul Karpowich fared little better in his pro debut on Saturday night. The Clarkson University (Potsdam, NY) grad, who carried the Golden Knights on the shoulders of his 6' 2, 195-pound frame for the last four seasons, was torched for four goals on 16 shots in 21 minutes of playing time by the Fort Wayne Komets before giving way to Columbus farmhand Rob Madore for the last 38-plus minutes of a 6-2 opening night loss.
As with Peoria, however, there is a little good news for the Icemen, at least from a Blues' prospect development standpoint. Tyler Shattock, drafted 108th overall in 2009 by the Blues, scored Evansville's first ECHL goal at 2:47 of the second period to cut the defecit at the time to 4-1. Shattock's goal was assisted by fellow Blues' assignee Brett Sonne (85th overall, 2007), who later scored a shorthanded goal for the IceMen. Also, the fourth prospect assigned to Evansville this year by the Blues, rookie winger Cody Beach (134th overall, 2010), took part in the first of what will likely be several pro fights for him, engaging Fort Wayne's Daniel Nycholat at 4:39 of the opening stanza.
Sonne and Shattock were both even on the night, while Beach was one of five IceMen skaters to post a minus-2 mark in the team's initial ECHL game.
