Winnipeg Jets At St. Louis Blues Game Preview: Alexander Steen Leads The Way

Bruce Fedyck-USA TODAY Sports

His dad might have played for the Jets 1.0, and Winnipeg might be his hometown, but he and teammate Ryan Reaves would love to get some revenge for the Blues' 4-3 shootout loss on the 18th.

Wow, that Alexander Steen sure is something, isn't he? He had two goals Saturday night in the Blues 6-1 rout of the Nashville Predators. His ten goals so far on the season ties Alexander Ovechkin with the league lead in goals. He has points in his last four games, including two goals against the Winnipeg Jets on October 18th.

Unfortunately, the Blues couldn't maintain the lead despite the first line running roughshod over the Winnipeg defense. David Backes netted a goal that game, and T.J. Oshie had an assist (and a token shootout goal). The Blues' top line is lethal, and the Jets are going to have to find some way to neutralize them.

Good luck with that.

Jacob Trouba is still out, and unfortunately so is Paul Postma who just discovered a blood clot in his leg. Tobias Enstrom and Dustin Byfuglien are more than capable of giving the Blues a headache, but Zach Bogosian has shown a penchant for own-goals recently.

Honestly, the Jets' defense is hit or miss. Either they clamp down like in their 2-1 shootout win against the Dallas Stars Saturday night, or they allow two third period goals like in their 3-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. They're playing with one day's rest after a back to back, and have had to travel in from Colorado. They should be tired, and the Blues should be able to pounce on them easier than the similarly "tired" San Jose Sharks.

The Jets are 1-2-2 in their last five. This isn't the strongest team in the world, though they do have the capability to surprise. It all boils down to consistency, and it's just something that they have issues with. The Blues might have issues in consistency within a game - it takes a while for them to find their focus on occasion, but this season they've been consistently a strong team. No one knows what to expect from the Jets from game to game, and that's not serving them well in the wild Western Conference.
