Tonight I am flying pretty blind on the recap. Kansas loves college Basketball more then Hockey so the Fox Sports Net here was showing just that… silly Kansas why you weird. So On with RealBadRobot’s Blind recapping extravaganza!
Tonight the first period sounded fast passed and pretty intense. From the radio feed the crowd seemed into the game and boy did they have a reason to be. The Blues had 11 shots to Carolina’s 3 for the first 20 minutes. They had some great chances to capitalize on it but Carolina’s goalkeeper, Justin Peters, was there to make, what Chris Kerber made sound like some spectacular highlight reel saves. At the other end of the Ice Brian Elliot would save all three of Carolina’s shots easily. According to Kerbs they were two pretty routine glove saves and a easy save with the stick. With all of the scoring chances the first period was pretty penalty heavy. Both teams got two minors a piece, including one for St. Louis Blues, Alex Pietrangelo who took his first minor of the year, an elbow on the Canes’ Drayson Bowman.
The second period would start off rocky for the Carolina Hurricanes as Pietrangelo would ring the bell of Alexander Semin as he carried the puck behind the net and got caught with his head down. No penalty was called on the play but Semin would force a stoppage as he stayed down on the ice before slowly making it to the away bench of his own power. The Blues would take the first penalty of the second period, with T.J. Oshie committing a high stick offense against Mike Komisarek at 5:06. After Killing off Oshie’s Penalty the blues would go on the rush leading to a 2 on 1 chance for David Backes and Vladimir Tarasenko. They would hit the crossbar but a goal wouldn't be far behind them as Chris Stewart would set up Roman Polak with a beautiful one timer. Polak ripped the puck past Peters taking the lead 1-0 with pure force.
The goal would lead to a St. Louis Blues onslaught and resulting in Brendon Morrow setting up the Inglorious one getting him his eighth of the year.
Brian Elliott would face an onslaught of chances from Carolina after Backes’ goal. He was up for the task stopping everything they threw at him, much like Korra in last nights two part set up for the second season finale of The Legend of Korra, and then much like the Korra Finale, Shit got wonky.
At 15:05 of the period Carolina would take a too many men on the ice minor, proving to every St. Louisan that it isn’t always the Blues who can’t count but who still eventually get penalized for them. On the blue and yellow power play, at 15:37, Carolina’s Eric Staal would score, cutting the Blues lead in half. Unfortunately that wouldn't be the only short handed goal to get past Elliot. At 16:34 Elliot would leave the crease to play the puck instead of getting the puck past Cane’s. Riley Nash, he would bank it right to Nash would make the pass to Nathan Gerbe who would tie it up. Forcing every Blues fan on earth to pull a collective Facepalm in unison.
The Blues would take the tie into the locker room with them. I honestly hope there were a few tables flipped and water spilt in that locker room during intermission.
The Third part of our 60 minute game trilogy would start with a good shift from the Blues first line, attempting to bring back some energy after completely falling asleep on their power play last period. Semin would not return to the game with an upper body injury after the second period. Penalties continued to build. At 1:59 Vladimir Sobotka would take a hooking minor against Bowman giving the Hurricanes their first power play chance of the third. The Canes would push hard on the PP, but at 3:38. Jordan Staal would hock Barret Jackman and give the Blues a chance on 4 on 4 play for a spell before going on the man advantage. Petro would attempt to kill another man with his shot, unfortunately that man would be Oshie who would limp to the bench and appeared to be alright, just stung.
The Blues would dig in as time wound down in the period. They would go on the power play at 18:48 as Jay Harrison would elbow Pietrangelo. The Canes would pull Peters but Oshie would take advantage of the open net and put the Blues up 4-3.
The Game was very fun to listen to and Kerbs and Chaser made the listening experience as much fun as I remember it being. The Blues sounded good and strong tonight from the get go. They had their flubs as most teams do but for the god knows how many times over the years a Too Many Men call almost cost us a game. I recommend an offering to the hockey gods or a sage cleansing to get the bad illegal extra man bad joojoo out of the Blues systems. Other then then the flubs I really felt like the boys played a strong game and kept their composure even in instances which might have otherwise resulted in crazy bat shit tomfoolery. But a win is a win and I will gladly tack on the extra two points to our column. Celebrate tonight dear Blues fans for tomorrow the Caps are at our doorstep as the Blues start this years second three game road trip. All I have to say is Ovie who… cause all I have been hearing and seeing is Mr. Steeny all the way!
