Wolves make it four in a row

MILWAUKEE, WI --- The Chicago Wolves ended their circus road trip on a high note with a 4-3 victory over Milwaukee on Friday night in Amtrak Rivalry action at the Bradley Center.
Forwards Chris Porter, Dmitrij Jaskin, Pat Cannone, and Corey Locke all dented the net for Chicago (8-6-0-1). Goaltender Jake Allen (8-3-1) made 23 saves to earn his fourth win in a row.
Chicago opened up scoring with a shorthanded goal from Porter at 4:47. With Milwaukee (7-3-2-1) on the power play, Nathan Longpre moved the puck into the zone and attempted a wraparound on Milwaukee netminder Magnus Hellberg. Porter finished the play by poking the deflection past the goal line.
Jaskin added insurance to the Wolves lead minutes later. A deflection off Taylor Chorney’s shot from the blue line popped out to the front of the net, where Jaskin picked it up and buried it.

Wolves seize fifth straight win

ROSEMONT, IL --- The Chicago Wolves extended their winning streak to five games Saturday night with a 4-3 victory over Midwest Division-leading Grand Rapids at Allstate Arena.
Forward Nathan Longpre (G, 2A) and defenseman Cade Fairchild (2A) paced the offense for the Wolves (9-6-0-1). Chicago also received goals from left wings Sergey Andronov and Dmitrij Jaskin, and from defenseman Taylor Chorney. Goaltender Matt Climie (1-3-0) stopped 23 shots.
"I was real happy with our performance tonight," said Wolves head coach John Anderson. "Grand Rapids is a great team and we limited them to 26 shots. We were rewarded for our hard work."

PAW PRINTS: Fairchild's two assists in the win over Grand Rapids are his first two points of the 2013-14 season ... The Duluth, MN native has not scored a goal in the AHL since April 15, 2012, when he tallied for Peoria against the Wolves in a 3-2 loss on the final day of the 2011-12 regular season ... That game was also Jordan Binnington's pro debut; the then-18 year old Binnington, playing on a ATO (amateur tryout) contract, turned aside 35 of 38 shots in the loss, earning the game's third star for his trouble ... Rattie (5 G, 2 A) and defenseman David Shields (3 G, 4 A) are the scoring leaders among Blues' prospects assigned to the Wolves ... Rattie's five goals are good for a tie with veteran Corey Locke for the team lead in that category ... Shields, Jaskin and Jani Hakanpää are tops among Blues' prospects on the Wolves with plus-3 marks ... Allen's GAA of 2.24 is sixth in the AHL, and of the goalies ahead of him, only Norfolk's John Gibson has played more minutes (784:44 to Allen's 723:44) ... "Jake The Snake" also ranks fifth among AHL netminders with a 92.8 save percentage, and third with eight wins.

K-WINGS GAME RECAPS:

Nov. 15, 2013

Gourde leads K-Wings past Royals

Wännström nets GWG in K-Wings debut
KALAMAZOO, MI --- The Kalamazoo Wings ended the Reading Royals road warrior status at Wings Stadium with a 2-1 victory over the defending Kelly Cup Champions.
(The game was) scoreless until the second period, when Reading’s Yannick Tifu broke the gridlock scoring his first goal of the season with a wrist shot from the right circle with 3:13 remaining in the stanza.
Kalamazoo entered the third period shorthanded but that did not stop the K-Wings dynamic scoring duo. Eric Kattelus dug out the puck from the left corner to Yanni Gourde, who snuck in front and tied the game with a backhander 1:33 into the period.
Later in the period, Gourde earned his team-leading 11th point of the season on a secondary assist. Finding room at the point, Mike Matczak sent a slap shot that was deflected by Sebastian Wännström (1st), who was making his team debut after being reassigned to Kalamazoo by the St. Louis Blues earlier in the morning.
Earning his second consecutive victory, Jordan Binnington (2-2-0-0) made nine of his game-high 27 saves in the final period.

K-Wings storm past Cyclones

Kalamazoo defeats Cincinnati 5-2 to close out five-game home stand
KALAMAZOO, MI --- Led by a five-point combined effort by Sebastian Wännström (2 goals, 1 assist) and Yanni Gourde (2 goals) the Kalamazoo Wings closed out their five-game home stand with a convincing 5-2 victory Saturday night versus the Cincinnati Cyclones.
Dominating the action in the first period, Kalamazoo suffocated Cincinnati outshooting the Cyclones 19-7. Kalamazoo’s pressure led to a goal midway in the period, when Eric Kattelus finished an odd-man rush by feeding Wännström (2nd) for the go ahead marker. Wännström, who made his K-Wings debut the night before, has earned goals in his first two games in a K-Wings jersey.
Gourde led the K-Wings inspired play in the second period. The team’s leading scorer, Gourde (4th) notched his 12th point of the season 4:10 into the stanza from a Wännström pass. The point increased Gourde’s point streak to three games, a K-Wings’ season-high.
Jordan Binnington (3-2-0-0) earned his third straight victory and the K-Wings second consecutive win turning aside 30 shots.

WING TIPS: The Blues have four prospects skating in Kalamazoo at the present time: Binnington, Brett Ponich, Yannick Veilleux and Wännström ... Since beginning the season 0-2, and since getting only one goal of support from his teammates in the two losses, Binnington has won three straight starts and gotten ten goals in support while allowing just five in that span ... "Binnasty" ranks eighth among ECHL netminders with a 1.98 GAA (10 goals against in 303 minutes played), and has turned aside 130 of 140 shots against for a 92.9% saves rate, also good for eighth place in the league ... In 16 career ECHL games (14 last year with Evansville and two this season), Wännström has racked up nine goals, 11 points, 12 minutes in penalty time, and is a plus-7.
