Red Wings At Blues Recap: Blues' Wheels Fall Off

Dilip Vishwanat

Three Wings got their first goal tonight, and seven got their first point. Something is very wrong with the Blues, and they need to fix it.

Oh, tonight's game got messy all right. It was a big, huge hot mess on the part of the Blues, who apparently are confused as to what portion of the season the lockout truncated. Why? Because they've stopped playing. Outscored 11-2 in the last few games, the team's defense has taken shifts off, has been unaware, and has just left Brian Elliott wide open for shots. Ells, without Halak, doesn't have that failsafe to push him, and we're seeing the evidence of that right now. Having the second lowest team save percentage in the NHL is not something to be proud of.

What do they need to do to fix it? Smelling salts under the defensemen's noses? Red Bull for the sluggish forwards floating about? Who knows, but when you have a game where you make a good AHL goalie look like a NHL all-star, and you let the Wings' third and fourth lines come to life, you have a problem.

Hey, at least Alex Pietrangelo scored a power play goal! There. There's your consolation prize for the evening. Unless the Blues fix this culture of meh that is currently permeating the team, this season's going to be an on-again/off-again one. Get your head out of your ass and play.

I'll have something up tomorrow sometime looking at the Blues' play so far this season. I was hoping for more positives, but as it stands right now, I'm not sure about that.
