Blues Call Up Dmitrij Jaskin From Peoria

Nick Laham

Well, that was quick - the newest member of the St. Louis Blues organization has already been called up and is in Nashville with the club.

You may remember our very own Prospect Department mentioning that European forward and Blues draft pick (41st overall in 2011) Dmitrij Jaskin had been signed to an entry level contract. Well, in a move that took no time at all, the Blues called him up to the big time. From St. Louis' press release:

Jaskin, 20, dressed in 51 games for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s (QMJHL) Moncton Wildcats this season leading the club and ranking 5th league-wide with 99 points including 46 goals and 53 assists to go along with 73 penalty minutes. In addition, the 6’3, 205-pound forward was named the QMJHL’s first star of the month for November 2012 and January 2013 while he also earned first star of the week honors for consecutive weeks in January. Prior to 2012-13, Jaskin spent two seasons with Slavia Praha HC of the Czech Extraleague posting 12 points (four goals, eight assists) and 32 penalty minutes in 63 career games.

So, then, the kid can score in the QMJHL. Does that mean necessarily that he can score at the NHL level? Uh, no -- obviously there's a skill difference there. Does it give him a bit of an increased chance at scoring in the NHL? Absolutely. Kid's big. He might lack experience, but lacking experience doesn't make you teeny tiny on the ice unless you play that way, and I'll go out on a limb and assume that he hasn't scored goals by playing like a midget.

Andy McDonald is back in tonight, so chances aren't good that we'll see Jaskin play. Honestly, plunking him into the lineup without getting any practice time is, as Ken Hitchcock said, unfair. But it is exciting to know that the Blues have one more weapon in their line-up heading into crunch time.

Oh, and Petr Cajanek fans? Sorry:
