2013 NHL Free Agency: Will The Blues Sign Impact Players?

One man's trash is another man's second line center. - USA TODAY Sports

It's that time again - that monthlong stretch where we hope and pray for the Blues to sign a big name guy, and then are pleasantly surprised with what they do.

"OH MY GOD THE BLUES MISSED OUT ON LECAVALIER AND BRIERE."

Yup, it's that time of year again: free agency! Those months where we hope and pray for the Blues to sign some huge free agent name and we're left scratching our head as to what they just did. How many of us went "Brian Elliott? Seriously?" And how many of us were thrilled with his performance in 2011-2012 and in half of 2013? Or take Jamie Langenbrunner and Jason Arnott. Two players we wrote off as old guys who actually added some oomph to one of the best teams in the league.

My point is this: don't be too awful disappointed because Doug Armstrong knows what he's doing. Let's just hope that other GMs don't. You know, like Dave Nonis. Good job with the Leafs so far, Dave.

Treat this as your trade deadline open thread. I'll be adding updates if the Blues make moves, both to the frontpage and to this story stream. If they're not doing much, please feel free to complain and laugh at what the other teams have done. And for the love of God, if someone signs Tim Thomas, I don't want to have to break up a political fight up in hurrr. Let's just all agree that signing him after a year off is a bad idea, then move on to laughing at whatever team signes Jose Theodore.
