Twas night of St. Patrick's Day. Blood was thick in the air in downtown St. Louis as the Blues took on the Winnipeg Jets. The memory of the St. Patrick's Day Massacre hung heavy in the memories of many fans. Tonight the game would take on a physical, chippy, and down right nasty theme. The Blues would be strong after receiving the ill fated news of the loss of the Russian Hug Machine, Vladimir Tarasenko to a hand injury. They recieved some happy news as their T.J. Oshie welcomed his daughter into the world this morning. Little Lyla Grace Oshie would rest at the hospital with Mom and Dad as her uncles by ice and puck would wage battle without her daddy. Needless to say, there was a little concern for missing both Senko and Osh but it didn't show as the Blues took the ice for the first period.
Dmitrij Jaskin would replace Senko on the line of Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Sobotka. Gain one Vlad lose another, I think we need a old school Russian witch-doctor to help us get this out of the works. The blue and yellow put pressure on the Jets for the majority of the first 8 minutes, holding possession of the puck and funneling it towards the net, but couldn't seem to get their shots on goal. Sobe seemed to be everywhere, forcing his way through the Jets players. 11:27 Jaskin makes a good effort to prove his worth and almost snuck a wraparound past the Jets' goalie. The period would end with both teams failing to convert a scoring chance. The period went by quickly; it had a consistent flow to it as only 9 face-offs would be set up all period.
The second period would see a change of pace from both teams. The team from St. Louis would be able to get a puck past Al Montoya at 1:44. The goal would come off of the face-off; Derek Roy would feed Brenden Morrow the puck allowing him to stick it into the back of the empty net for the lead, it would be 1-0 Blues. At 2:39 Alexander Steen would get Bryan Little's high stick to the nose and it would result in the first power play of the game. The power play would unfortunately be, as my boyfriend put it, "Probably one of the worst power plays this year." The two teams would duke it out for the remainder of the period without further incident.
The last 20 minute period would commence with the Blues seeming to ease off of the gas pedal, allowing the tired Jets to get on the board at 1:55. The tie would stand for a considerable amount of time as the game continued to get quite a bit more rough. Alex Pietrangelo would get a weird high stick against Evander Kane at 3:09. The Blue and Yellow would be able to kill the penalty. At 11:26 Kane would get a slashing minor against Chris Porter. Captain David Backes would be able to get a power play goal of of a rebound at 13:09.
The game would press on with 6 more penalty minutes would be doled out to the Blues and Jets. Tempers ran HOT towards the end of the game. At 18:49 Captain Inglorious would be awarded a goal even though he didn't actually put the puck on the net. The empty netter would be awarded to Backes after he was tripped up on his way to empty net goal scoring glory!
The last second of the game would see quite a bit happen. Chris Porter would seemingly score as 100 penalty minutes would be handed out at the other end. A line brawl progressed as Barret Jackman and Dustin Byfuglien would duke it out in the corner. Jaxx would not like a hit that he received from Byfuglien and a scrum would ensue!
