So, we're back on the road again. Playing the Eastern Conference again. UGH. Well, at least we get to see old friends Chris Pronger and Ian Laperriere. It just seemed appropriate, nearly inevitable, that Pronger ended up playing in Philly.

Philadelphia was the first of the the expansion class of 1967 to win a Cup, and around that same time developed the nickname "Broad Street Bullies". That was earned with notoriously hard hitting players that physically intimidated their opponents. (Side note, wouldn't Street Bully Broads be a great name for a Philly girls Roller Derby team?). That reputation continues today, although Philly fans alternate between denying it and reveling in it. Captain Suspension should be a perfect fit, then.

The Flyers will come out hitting, tonight, and the Boys in Blue should just take them with a smile, and lay a few hits of their own.

Details of the name-the-team contest were released on July 12, 1966. As sponsor of the contest, ballots were available at local Acme Markets grocery stores and included a top prize of a RCA 21" color television, two season tickets for both the second and third prize winners, and a pair of tickets to a game for the next 100 winners. Among the names considered behind the scenes were Quakers, Ramblers, and Liberty Bells. The first two were the names of previous Philadelphia hockey teams and given the connotations of losing (Quakers) and the minor leagues (Ramblers), were passed over. Liberty Bells, though seriously considered, was also the name of a local race track. Bashers, Blizzards, Bruisers, Huskies, Keystones, Knights, Lancers, Raiders, and Sabres were among the other names considered.

The flying P has been the Flyers' primary logo since the beginning. It was Ed Snider's sister Phyllis who ended up naming the team when she suggested Flyers on a return trip from a Broadway play. Ed knew immediately it would be the winning name, since it captured the speed of the game and went well phonetically with Philadelphia. On August 3, 1966, the team name was announced. Of the 11,000 ballots received, more than 100 selected Flyers as the team name and were entered into a drawing to select a winner. 9-year-old boy Alec Stockard from Narberth, who had spelled it "Fliers" on his entry, won the drawing and was declared the winner.

Leave it to a Philadelphia team to misspell their team name for 40+ years ....

DanGNR reporting from Hotlanta, GA. I made it safe and sound to my brothers house on the outskirts of Atlanta, GA.

On the outset of my trip, I realized that I would pass pretty close to Metropolis. I figured I would stop and pay my respects to Superman Backes.

It is surprising that I have never made the trip to Metropolis. It is just a couple of miles off the highway. I have made the drive from the Lou to Hotlanta several times but have never stopped to see the Statue.

GDT Roll Call: Not For Lack Of Effort

Yet another frustrating loss by the Blues is offset by another herculean effort in the GDT. Despite the lack of output on the ice, 46 of you managed to put up over 1,100 comments during the game. Maybe if the Blues' forwards took some motivation from this group and worked harder and more consistently, we'd have had a better outcome.

Through talking with our very own Hildy, I understand there are several GTers heading down to the Hot lanta area for an ice hockey game between some folks wearing a Bluenote and some other folks wearing something in regards to a bird I think. What the fuck is a Thrasher anyway?

Lets make a point of having a GT get together either before, during, or after the game.

Please post here so we can all get on the same page.

I am going to hit the road (from the Lou to the great white south) in about 5 minutes. Yeah.

Mr. Checketts: Fix the Escalator!

In case you haven't noticed, the fans in section 303 are pissed off. They're pissed with the Blues' start, pissed they're getting the shaft from both Dish and FSMW, and now pissed you won't fix the fucking escalator that bucked some fatties about 5 losses ago. Your team's one win at home is a much bigger liability than the investigation into what went wrong on that night. So for God's sake, either rack (notice spelling) up some Ws or fix the fucking escalator!

Ok most (almost all?) of us love watching the game while drinking lots of beer...but the damn new girl they have doing the Dirt Cheap commercials sounds annoying / or that shes 12.

What happened to Fred? The guy who always said..."The more she drinks, the better you look?"

Strachan and Stastny to Peoria

According to Chris Kerber on Twitter, Yan Stastny and Tyson Strachan have been reassigned to Peoria. The Rivermen have a game today and both players were scheduled to arrive in time to play. Rivermen play again on Thursday.

I'm assuming Stastny will be called up again in time for Thursday's game as cover just in case Oshie and/or McDonald can't play. What do you think? Will Strachan stay down? Is this the sign that Colaiacovo has recovered from the flu? And that maybe...just maybe...Jackman is on the brink of returning?

I'm honestly not sure of the waiver situation as regards Stastny - can anyone help out? If he's recalled again... will other teams be able to claim him?

In case, like me, you could only listen on the radio last night, you'd have missed the scary sight of Happy Meal crashing headfirst into the boards.

Well, here it is:

I'm so glad he got up and skated off - admittedly with help - after this. Strickland is reporting that he went to hospital for observation but it's not believed to be serious. This is one guy we simply can't do without at the moment. Happy Meal is working his little ass off - let's hope he continues to do so.

If one guy is going to provide the lift needed to get the team out of its current slump then it's Happy Meal - or Perron.

Fingers crossed that early reports are correct and that it's NOT as serious as it initially looked. Scary stuff.

My Family purchased the ticket package for the "Meet and greet a Blues player."
This was after the Hamilton game last Thursday.

I specifically asked Juan if he would mind if I take a couple of GTs for the players as gifts. He said "sure."

I also gave each player a disc golf disc and then, of course, got them to sign my Sweden pucks.
(sorry for that reference again).

The title of the post was kinda how it went unfortunately. I didn't mean to be rude to Tyson Strachan.

Ya see. Daughter of DanGNR was in front of me. When it was "our turn" to "meet and greet" the players, she skipped right by Tyson and went to Oshie and started chatting it up with him. I was getting my stick signed by Tyson while giving him the GT and discs while she was still with Oshie. I rushed my time with Tyson in order to "be a part" of the daughter/player interaction. I missed most of what she and Oshie talked about. Ya see, she drew a picture for Oshie and had her own stick and jersey for Oshie to sign. So we both skipped talking to Tyson to get to Oshie.

I honestly feel like an ass for "that other guy" syndrome when we were up there. Hopefully he didn't take it personally.. as it was unintentional due to the "rushing" us all through the line. I of course realized that I should have had Daughter of DanGNR behind me while going through the line.

My daughter with her 2nd favorite player. (He may now be her fav. player after meeting him.)

I of course offered up a "free" copy of GT for each player.

Extra Ticket to 10/31 Game

I ended up buying one more ticket than I needed for tonight's Halloween game against the Panthers. If you don't mind sitting next to myself (probably just in my jersey), my girlfriend (as an angel, of course), and my best friend from undergrad and total hockey n00b (as a crazy ski guy or something in some kind of crazy prison-orange jumpsuit he found in a secondhand store in Provo), it can be yours.

I'd like to get $12 if I could, since I did have to buy it originally, but I'm flexible.

We'll also probably be hitting the CWE after the game for Halloween festivities, and you're more than welcome to join us.

Celebrating 50 Years Of The Goalie Mask

This Sunday the NHL will honor the goalie mask. It was Fifty years ago Monday at Madison Square Garden in New York, Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens changed the face of hockey forever. This was not lost on us budding Blues fans when Plante was traded to the Blues in 1968.

We played a lot of street and pond hockey after the Blues came to town and Billy C. was our goalie. One day we decided he needed a ~~better~~ kewler mask than the plain old white Cooper mask Billy had. All the local goalies had the plain Cooper mask, we'd be the first with a Plante Bird mask in our neighborhood. The problem was a new official Plante Bird mask went for as much as a pair of new CCM Tacks skates at Giesler Jorgen Sporting Goods, which back then was well over $100 big ones.

"How hard could it be to make a mask?", we asked ourselves, it was just some fiberglass and a mold? We'd done paper mache' heads in school so this would be a snap.

We got some fiberglass, some wire window screen mesh and some resin and took a face mold off Billy's face. We used aluminum foil to keep the Plaster of Paris mold from sticking to his face. We poured the resin onto the fiber and screen and VOILA!! Instant mask, just like Plante's.We drilled a bunch of ventilation holes and added a headstrap and some stick on cushion pad on the inside. Then it was off to test it out. Hell, we even painted it Pattonville Green with a Blues' Note for good luck.

At first Billy started to wobble in goal as we lined up on Mark's back porch to put the prototype to the test. We weren't sure what the problem was.

Bad vision out of the eyeholes?

Were his glasses fogging up with poor ventilation?

Nope, the resin fumes had made him see starz and he was higher than a kite it appeared. No worries, we were almost done, just a couple shots and we'd have our answer.

Mark could whistle a puck high around the ears like the pros so he took the first shot. The mask exploded like a grenade and Billy tipped over like a freshly cut pine tree. We thought we had killed our poor goalie so we drug him into the garage so Mark's mom wouldn't see all the blood pouring out of his forehead.

After reviving Billy we assured him it was a minor setback and we'd have a new version ready in no time. Billy said no thanks and bought the Plante Bird mask from Giesler Jorgen the next week. We all chipped in since we felt so bad about all the fiberglass embedded in his head and eyes.

The rest is history they say as others went on to steal our thunder as future mask makers.

According to Jeremy Rutherford over at the Post-dispatch, TJ Oshie has been back on the ice today. He's apparently been limited to video games and movies since last weekend. (Poor guy...let's hope he hasn't overdone the games part...I'm currently suffering from "Wii thumb" and let me tell you it's VERY painful!).

If you read Rutherford's post - Oshie skates - Oshie hopped over the boards and skated a hard lap. I'm impressed - not that I've ever had an op but how sensitive ARE the stitches etc?

It WILL be great if we can get him back for next Thursdays game against Calgary. Man of Steel Oshie could be back sooner than we think...

The Fins are coming!

Hey SLGT,

Mr. K. here (yeah, I've got a new name now). Lurker Shark and I will be coming to St. Louis in 2 weeks for the Blues vs. Sharks game on Saturday, November 14th. We'll then be pressing onward to Chicago for the Sunday game vs. the Blackhawks.

While our time in St. Louis will be brief, we're hoping to run into at least one of you crazy bastards at the DrinkScotch. We haven't purchased the St. Louis tix yet (just got the Chicago ones 5 minutes ago), so if you'd like to have a SLGT-FTF row, let me know. Anyone already have tickets to the game?

Oh, and Gallagher promised to burn down the Arch in our honor, so we'll have to hold him to that ;-)

Puck Daddy posted a story about a female Flames fan who is pissed that there isn't a female cut of the vintage Calgary sweaters the team is wearing this season.

The post went on to express outrage over the pink sweaters offered for all 30 teams, while only a handful had similarly-fashioned home/away sweaters.

So my question is: do you find this to be an issue? Would you be more likely to buy a Blues sweater if it fit you better? Or are you already buying the "traditional cut" and couldn't give a rat's ass about form-fitting sweaters?

Twitter Mainframe Says Mr. Roboto, Eric Brewer, Powering Up For Tonight

Yes, friends, our Captain is back ... from his back injury. According to a tweet (never gonna get used to saying that) by the Blues official twitter feed, Eric Brewer will make his 2009-10 season debut tonight against Phoenix.

Eric Brewer will play tonight against the Coyotes.

No word on who will be out of the lineup (Tyson Strachan or Alex Pietrangelo seem the likey candidates). More on this as it develops, but hey, the Captain returns. Joy?

Do you see what the Blues did here? They didn't give any informative updates since training camp. They didn't want his rehab and pending return to be talk show fodder for the month of October. They intentionally wanted Brewer to be a non story. And they accomplished it. The only thing I question is why they're choosing for his game to be at home. Sure he's the captain, but there will be boos. Oh yes, there will be boos.

When healthy and happy and motivated, Brewer is a decent player in the offensive zone and solid in his own end. He takes some chances, and when he gets burned, it's usually in a loud and obvious way. So much has happened on this team since he was healthy. It should be interesting to watch his role on the team, the situations Andy Murray puts him in and how he gels with teammates.

The Boys in Blue have had a lot hit them lately, both literally and figuratively. Their last trip out east went poorly, and since then they've had a pretty tough road with the officiating, cheap shots, and they're own bodies trying to kill the team. It's going to be an emotional game, for sure, as the Blues have to put that all behind them. Ride out that storm, and we'll be fine. Show us what you're made of, boy(e)s !!
