An Objective Look At Walt's Play This Season

Well I tried to call out Tkachuk for his play recently in the game thread and got shit and pissed on for it. It could have been the way I attempted to vent my anger, so I will try to make a better argument in hopes of people being able to objectively look at his play and not just think I was trying to get back at Walt for fucking my woman in the sandhole…or something.

I played hockey for 15 years, have been watching the Blues all my life. I say this because I would like to think I know a little bit about the game and I am not a frosted tip douche bag like those we love to have on the STLtoday boards. So don’t start with the hate yet.

I will start off with what I would call logical arguments for Walt not playing well. What is his skill set right now? He is not a playmaker, a goal scorer, a face-off specialist, or good on the stopper line. Does anyone have confidence in him to turn an odd man rush, or any kind of rush, into a scoring opportunity when he is carrying the puck into the zone? Not me. Or what about the energy or skill set to take over 2 minutes of a game when we are tied or down by 1 and need to win. I don’t think he can do that anymore. He can’t pass all that well, obviously can’t handle a pass, and in the game against the Sharks (I think) he fell down at least 5 times either b/c he couldn’t skate or was pushed off the puck with minimal effort. At best, he can win some battles on the board and stand in front of the net to get garbage goals (I don’t mean to take away from the value of those goals…its just that I don’t think it takes any special kind of player to be able to do that. I think you should be able to stick most any of your players on your NHL team in front of the net and expect them to get the job done). I know Murray’s style of play emphasizes dumping the puck in and gaining control (something Walt should presumably still be able to do) but if that was the case, wouldn’t he have more assists or at least be at a fairly respectful +/- (as of the time I am writing this after his goal in the first period, he is at a -1 for the year). Basically, if you put Walt in a different jersey without his name or 7 on the back of it, I’m pretty sure we would all think his ability to help this team on the ice is quite minimal.

Now for some numbers. Since October 10 in our 2-1 loss against LA (15 games not including last night) he has 4 pts (all assists). He has 17 SOG and that includes a stretch of four games where he registered 0 SOG. He has not scored (before last night) since October 8 against ATL. Now yes, the whole team has been playing poorly of late, and I’m not trying to single out Tkachuk at all. However, his skill set and style of play makes him one of the most, if not the most, expendable player on the team (or at least the most expendable forward on the team). Crombeen, McClement and Steen are a great stopper unit and have a solid place on the team. Boyes, Backes, Oshie, Perron, McDonald, all have enough skill to call what they are going through a “scoring slump”. Karyia has skill too, but he may be getting to old and I’m not willing to attack or defend him right now. Janssen will always have a place on this team. Tkachuk and Winchester seem to be the odd players out. Winchester had a nice year last year where one could think he may be an ascending player, but he sure doesn’t have the history or pedigree to warrant any kind of slack and thinking he will be a good-solid player. That just leaves Big Walt (along with Berglund who is an enigma. I don’t wanna go near there). Again, I am only talking about on the ice contributions here. For a team that is struggling so much on the power play and to score goals, I don’t see where to give someone like Walt a significant amount of ice time or even put him on a prime line. Even with his limited role, his play seems so bad that he makes the best of not helping the team even though he has a limited role. Basically, if everyone is playing shitty, something has gotta give. And that something, to me, seems to be Tkachuk. He is a cool dude and great leader, but this team needs on ice skill right now. Make him a coach if you want him around this team. Again, I know this team has a lot of problems right now. As a team, we take too many low percentage shots and don’t open up any kind of a shooting lane. Our defensive core as a whole is no where near dynamic enough. But for the most part, this is the same team as last year. As well as we played in the 2nd half last year, we played just as poorly in the first half. You can make just as good an argument saying that we would be a bad team this year based on our first half as you could thinking we would be good this year because of our 2nd half.

If you disagree, OK…what does Walt bring to this team while he is on the ice? What does he bring on the ice that no other, or few other players on this team couldn’t bring? I think his skill set is average at best and replaceable at worst. And I know he scored last night, but anyone who saw that goal should not be impressed with it at all. The initial shot was incredibly pathetic and he pretty much ran into the goalie to put the puck in the net.

Thank you for pointing yourself out for your stupidity in the first period when the Blues gave up their first goal to the Coyotes. I kept an eye on you throughout the rest of the game. Interestingly enough, I noticed that every good play Brewer made, you were turned around in your seat (as in, away from where the game was taking place) explaining to the other idiot behind you, why Brewer is not qualified as a defenseman. I heard you talk about how he is a -1 now and how that adds to his lifetime +/-.

By the way, where were you when he kept that puck in the zone like a defenseman should, or when he made perfect outlet passes across 2 lines to an open forward? Where were you when the Coyotes attempted to clear the puck on 3 unsuccessful powerplays and Brewer held it in like he should, and even put a few good shots on net? Oh yeah, you were turned around away from the play talking about how much you know about hockey and how much you know Brewer sucks...

I wanted to respond in the original thread, but apparently the comments were closed...

I want to thank Doc Whiskey for giving me the inspiration to take a stand against the stupidity that is the "Powerplay Dance". I faced ridicule for making that sign that I proudly displayed during 3 powerplays that did not pay off because enough people did not pay heed to the warning.

However, it was all worth it when I witnessed my entire section of 307 sit and applaud the sign and the stats...with the exception of 2 douchebags in Row Y (last from the wall), seats 1 and 2, who found themselves proud enough to mock my sign and do the dance in spite of it...apparently, they weren't paying attention to the stat that my wife was attentively updating throughout the game...fucking douchebags. We now sit at 10 for 75 (13%). Thanks cock-knockers, hope you enjoyed bobbing up and down like idiots...and douchebags.

By the way, I would like to thank the couple from 305 that not only liked the sign during the 1st intermission, but happily reported to me in the 2nd intermission that their section halted all powerplay dance operations due to the sign and its ominous warnings.

Anyway I will make this a commitment of mine until that damn dance disappears. Fuck those 2 guys, the same way I hope Louis The Blue Rat goes to 317 (or whatever the section is that doesn't matter with the guy that we want to jump) without his pants on and fucks towel boy in the ass...(I hope that wasn't too far...fuck that shit, we all know it, we all wish we could say it out loud.)

Sorry for anyone that is unfortunate enough to sit in 307+10. If you're a part of this site, I love you...Unless of course, you're a douchebag that waves a towel around when we're down 4-1 just so you can show up on the Jumbotron...FUCK YOU. (and FUCK DETROIT !!!)

Apparently, we can now text Guest Services during home games if we have a complaint or concern. According to the article posted on the Blues homepage:

"The system is designed to give fans an additional level of assistance at the games, giving them direct access to assistance from Scottrade Center Guest Services department. Fans should text the word ‘BLUES’ to 69050 and describe their situation, location, question or concern. A representative from Guest Services will arrive to assist fans if necessary."

Does this mean I can now text to complain when Brewer's being a douchebag? How handy!!

This Friday, 11/20, the ScottTrade Center will host a benefit for the Missouri Emergency Nurses Association. They are raising money to by new equipment for St Louis area ambulances/EMRs. It is a sort of a double-header: First, the Blues Alumni take on local media personalities in a scrimmage at 5:30. After that, the local NAHL affiliate, the St Louis Bandits take on the North Iowa Outlaws at 7:30. This is Kelly Chase's team, and I'm told that they are exciting to watch.

The day will have many fun and exciting events including oral and silent auctions, all expense paid trip giveaways, ticket giveaways, player jersey auctions and an airplane toss to win a vehicle!!!! There will also be current and former Blues player attending and available for autographs!

I have some free tickets through work, and have 4 seats for whoever can take them. I hope some of you all can come, have fun, and help a good cause.

Just to keep tabs on progress, I thought this should have its own FanPost.

Last night I submitted an entry on Canes Country, and this evening a similar one went up on Fear the Fin. There's been some feedback on the one in Second City Hockey, so I know we've gotten some support from around SBN. The one on Canes Country even got a few rec's, LOL. Nice. I don't know about the Oilers site ... no comments or anything, so it's hard to say. Ditto the Thrashers site, but I'm leaving that to Hildy....

As of this entry, we've knocked it down from 78/22 to.... (votes again) 63/36 ... so we ARE seeing results. Feel free to chart our progress in the comments below, and also any ideas of where/how to spread the word.

First GameTime GetTogether of the new season ...

We had fun with these last year, I think we're due for another!

Last year we had a few GameTime GetTogethers on the East Side, and we've got a good opportunity coming up soon. Basically, it's a chance to watch a road game, drink with fellow GameTimers, and still participate in the GDT here online. Nuttin' wrong with that!

Coming up, on 11/25, the Blues are on the road in Dallas. We can make this a sort of wake for Steve "CheapShot" Ott, for he may well die that night. The next day is Thanksgiving, so most folks won't have to worry about drinking and then going to work the next morning. Most bars do not have live music or big crowds on a Wednesday, so we should have no problems spreading out. It is a Versus game, so we need to make sure that the bar can get that network (remember the good old days when that wasn't a concern?). We might even catch an out-of-towner home for the holiday. All in all, this sounds like a good night for it.

The last ones were held in Collinsville, IL, at a bar called Fifth Quarter. They treated us well, had good food, and we had a lot of fun. Really, we could do this anywhere that 1) is showing the game, 2) has wifi for GDT participation, and 3) serves booze. My usual lunch spot in Maplewood, MO, would also work; Cousin Hugo's. I'm sure there are others.

I certainly wouldn't be opposed to going back there again, since its worked well for us before. If there is a better location that meets our criteria, we have some time to work this out. Let's hear about it!

OK I'm still not quite ready to push the panic button. Although I have flipped up the plastic safety cover that keeps the janitor from mistakingly hitting it while he's cleaning up.

Even though I know we might need something drastic to shake us out of our stupor I still don't think they'll get rid of AM even though it's the default answer nowadays if you aren't winning. That lead me to start thinking of things that they can do to try and light a fire under the players and get some wins. I threw some of my ideas into a poll and if anyone else has ideas throw them into the comments.

One of the National Hockey League’s all-time greatest snipers and one of its fiercest competitors, Brendan Shanahan, announced his retirement today, bringing an end to his 21-year career.

“I would like to thank my family and all of the friends who have helped me achieve and maintain my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League”, said Shanahan. “I am enormously grateful to all of my coaches and teammates I've had the privilege of learning from and playing along side of, throughout my career. While I always dreamed of playing in the NHL, I can't honestly say that I would have ever imagined that I'd be this fortunate and blessed. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped me fulfill this dream.”

Shanahan finishes his career in 11th place on the NHL’s all-time goal scoring list with 656 goals. He stands 11th in games played with 1,524, 22nd in penalty minutes with 2,489, 23rd in points with 1,354 and 49th in assists with 698. He is the only player in NHL history to amass more than 2,000 penalty minutes and 600 goals and leads all NHL players with 17 “Gordie Howe” hat tricks. One of the game’s all-time clutch performers, Shanahan ranks fifth all-time with 109 game-winning goals. He tallied 237 goals on the power play, also fifth in NHL history, including a League-leading and career-best 20 in 1996-97.

The eight-time NHL All-Star recorded at least 40 goals in six of his 21 seasons and is one of only 11 players in NHL history to have 12 seasons of at least 30 goals. Shanahan’s 19 consecutive 20-goal seasons rank second to only Gordie Howe’s 21. He eclipsed the 50-goal mark on two occasions, tallying 51 in 71 games with St. Louis in 1992-93 and then reached a career high with 52 in 1993-94, when he also led the League with seven shorthanded tallies. Shanahan was voted to the NHL First All-Star Team twice (1994, 2000) and the NHL Second All-Star Team once (2002). Throughout his career, Shanahan was always one of the League’s top ambassadors. He was awarded the King Clancy Trophy in 2003 for his exemplary work in the community. Shanahan enjoyed his finest offensive season in 1993-94, when he established career-highs in goals (52), assists (50), points (102), penalty minutes (211) and shots (397).

Appearing in the post-season in 19 of his 21 seasons, Shanahan ranks 35th on the NHL’s playoff scoring list with 134 points in 184 games. He ranks seventh with a plus 31 rating, tied for 19th with 12 game-winning goals and is tied for 27th with 60 goals. In 1997, Shanahan placed second on the Red Wings in playoff scoring with 9 goals and 8 assists for 17 points, while helping lead Detroit to their first Stanley Cup in 42 years. In 2002, he ranked second on the team and tied for third in the NHL with 19 points in 23 games, helping lead the Red Wings to their third Stanley Cup in six seasons.

Shanahan began his National Hockey League career with New Jersey, helping a young Devils team reach the post-season for the first time in team history in 1988. He signed with St. Louis prior to the 1991-92 season, led the Blues in scoring in 1993-94 with 102 points and still holds the franchise records for goals and points by a left winger in a single season. After a one-year stint with the Hartford Whalers, Shanahan was traded to the Detroit Red Wings early in the 1996-97 season. He was a key member of the leadership core that guided the Red Wings to three Stanley Cup championships. Shanahan led the Wings in goals or points in seven of his nine seasons in Detroit. He registered his 600th career NHL goal on October 5, 2006, as a member of the New York Rangers and spent two seasons on Broadway after signing with the team on July 9, 2006. He concluded his NHL career with the team that originally drafted him, the New Jersey Devils, during the 2008-09 season.

Internationally, Shanahan has represented Canada in several tournaments. He is one of only 22 players -- one of only four Canadians -- in the exclusive “triple gold” club, which includes those who have won the Stanley Cup and captured gold at the Olympics and IIHF World Championships. Shanahan led Team Canada to its first World Championship in 33 years in 1994, placing second on the team in scoring with seven points in six games. He was a member of the 1991 Canada Cup Championship team, Canada's fifth and final Canada Cup title team. The two-time Olympian represented Canada in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, and then helped Canada capture its first Olympic gold medal in 50 years in 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shanahan then became only the third player in NHL history to win an Olympic gold medal and Stanley Cup championship in the same year when the Red Wings captured the Stanley Cup in June of 2002. Additionally, Shanahan represented Canada in the inaugural World Cup of Hockey in 1996.

The native of Mimico, Ontario was originally New Jersey’s first round selection, second overall, in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. He amassed 656 goals, 698 assists for 1,354 points in 1,524 NHL matches with New Jersey, St. Louis, Hartford, Detroit, and New York.

Power Play Dance

I will be the first person to say it though I can't possibly be the first person to think it....the power play dance is a fucking curse. I have no idea what kinda of voodoo shit has been invoked when scores of people do this thing, but it is angering someone up above. Think about it, when did the dance really start catching on? The end of the regular season last year and it blew up in the playoffs. It continues to grow in popularity this year. Now lets look at how our power play performed during that time. Our power play has been damn near non-existent. We need to put an end to this right now, and that means when you are at your next game it is your responsibility to do whatever it takes to stop this dance from occurring. Also, if you know anything about anti voodoo dances get to work on fixing the damage already done.

Spur of the moment thing...it was "student" night....decided to go to the game...so figured id make a few notes / random thoughts / random happenstances from the game and write them here. Plus a few pictures...i took a bunch but some didnt turn out well...plus i was uploading some late last night.

Ok had a bad day the day before so called up my buddy and we went to the game...

1. Big Daddys is awesome...Steak Night! and beers!!!! Usually go there before games...they know me by name now...good or bad thing?

Side note- waitress had a good laugh at our "student" ids...

2. On the way to the metrolink - beatboxer cornered us and did an awesome ass job...enough to have me give him a buck....very impressive though.

3. Pissed off about the tickets thing...right after we paid for the tix, some guy comes up saying I got free tickets to tonight anybody want them? WTF MAN...WTF....2 minutes earlier...damn.

4. Got my tix for the Dec 15th game vs Calgary for Brett Hull night...they better be announcing a statue of Hull

5. "Student" discounts were good...$20 upper or $35 lower and both come with a coupon for a little hot dog and a soda...at least $10 worth of food..so decided to go for the lower bowl this time.

6. I kept making Nashville Sexual Predator jokes...all the way to the arena..."Dont take the Wine Coolers OSHIE!"

7. IDIOT 2 sections over...trying the "Lets go Card-inals" chant...for the Blues..."Lets Go Bl-ues" doesnt work...its 3 beat...LETS GO BLUES...4 and 5 clap...Lets go Blu...es? clap clap clap clap clap...forget that crap.

8. Hamm commercial came on....started talking to my friend about how that hat isnt the right logo its this logo...

They gave him a gun...a tshirt gun...but a gun still...Everybody has heard the "Real Men of Genius" radio commercial where it says some of these you need a background check, a 3 day waiting period, and a training course...the Louie rat was wearing camo....(either to honor the military or find easier ways to hide in bushes near children). He also looked like he was looking for Charlie in the trees. Also if he has to avoid schools by 500 feet / 1000 feet...shouldnt he also not be able to get a gun?

24. Bret Hedican - back in the old arena sitting w/ my dad in the back row...there was a hallway to go up to the press box from where we were sitting. He was in the press box that night....walking up to there...talked to us...signed something for us...very impressive when i was a young kid for that to happen to me. Thats one of the only things i remember about that old arena...besides the metal staircase that started swinging when people were walking on it (maybe thats something that the escalator of doom have in common tempting fate at every step?) Brett Hull, and just random images of the Blues on the ice! and the Jr. Blue note club!

Vancouver Canucks forward Darcy Hordichuk was automatically suspended for one game, and Canucks coach Alain Vigneault fined $10,000 by the NHL for violation of the instigator rule.

Hordichuk was assessed an instigator penalty with 4:56 left in the third period of Tuesdays' game against the St. Louis Blues. NHL rules state any player given an instigator penalty in the final five minutes of a game or at any point in overtime is automatically suspended one game, and his coach automatically fined $10,000.

Hordichuk will miss Thursday's game at Detroit; he can return for Saturday's game at Colorado.

Hordichuk will lose $4,015.54, with that money going to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. Vigneault's fine goes to the NHL Foundation.

Break out the Nelson laugh - and way to go, Cam Janssen. Skating away from Hordichuk and making Hordichuk draw the instigator penalty. Nice one, Cam!
