Alexander Steen Injury: Blues Place Steen On Injured Reserve

The mid-season injuries just keep mounting up for the Blues' best players. The team announced today that leading scorer Alexander Steen will be on the injured reserve indefinitely with a concussion. From the Blues' press release:

St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the club has placed forward Alexander Steen on injured reserve with a concussion. Steen will be out indefinitely.

Steen, 29, has dressed in 35 games this season, leading the Blues and sharing 12th overall with 38 points. The 6’0, 212-pound forward ranks 2nd league-wide with a career-high tying 24 goals, while his six game-winning goals are second most and his +15 rating shares 12th among forwards. In addition, among forwards, Steen is one of two players (Anze Kopitar – LA) that lead their team in even strength, power play and shorthanded ice time per game.

Currently in his ninth NHL season and sixth as a Blue, Steen has totaled 341 points including 147 goals and 194 assists to go along with 248 penalty minutes in 572 career games. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native was originally acquired by the Blues from Toronto via trade in 2008.

Steen, if you remember correctly, just signed a three-year contract extension with the Blues worth $17.4 million. He celebrated by scoring two goals in the Blues' 5-1 defeat of the Montreal Canadiens. Unfortunately for Steen, a concussion with no timetable for return will put a damper on his Team Sweden Olympic hopes.

Steen joins Roman Polak, Ryan Reaves, and Jordan Leopold on the injured reserve.
