A quick look at the Blues power play

After last season, many Blues fans' principal concern going into 2014-2015 season was the power play. So let's take a look at how it's going at the one tenth of a season mark.

Did we just score a power play goal?!?!?

Eight games into an 82 game season is probably not the best time to be looking at the power play.  But last night on the twitter, I saw St. Louis Blues fans bemoaning the lack of shooting and scoring during the power play down in Dallas.

However, I think an argument could be made that we are seeing an improved power play by the Blues.  Let's take a look at the numbers real quick.

Since the typical power play lasts 2 minutes, I broke up the power play time into 120 second (2 minutes) segments to calculate the shots per 120 stat.  For instance, last season the Blues had 1.6 shots per 120 seconds of power play time.  This season the Blues have been shooting the puck slightly more with 1.9 shots per 120 seconds of power play time.  This includes all power play time (5v4, 5v3, 4v3, etc).  Right now the Blues are in the top 10 of power play percentage this season.

Even though it is only 8 games in, I like where this team could be heading in regards to the power play.  We should give it a chance and see how it plays out.
