==================================================

Once again in this installment of "The '14 File," our focus will be on the first complete (seven round) Mock Draft of the season. This is our attempt to simulate a potential game plan for the Blues at the real draft this June in Philadelphia, and to see the outcome of the draft strategies we have formulated.

The first four picks of the Mock Draft correspond (roughly) to the spots in which the Blues will actually be picking in June; the exception is the 65th overall pick in this mock (near the top of the third round), which was acquired in trade after dealing the 56th overall pick (near the end of the second round).

The strategy with these picks was to select the best player available, with a caveat; we had identified several areas in which the Blues' organization was lacking in depth, and determined to bolster that depth with these picks. The areas, in no particular order, were: Offense from the wings, offense from the blueline, a goaltender with amateur eligibility (college/junior) left, and a center.

We feel we addressed each of those areas with these picks:

From here forward, picks shown in RED will represent picks acquired through trades in this mock. Picks not highlighted in this way represent picks that the Blues currently own.

Our strategy for these next few picks was to add "project" players to the organization. With these picks, the Blues add a solid Russian scoring winger to the system, along with a pair of skilled defensemen and a center who played on the same line with (now-departed) 2013 second-round pick William Carrier when Carrier was with Cape Breton of the QMJHL.

Continuing with our strategy to add "project" players to the organization, these next two picks represent exceptional potential. Steven Spinner is a Minnesota native who is comparable in size and playing style to Ty Rattie, a player that is having a very solid first pro season, and Josh Wesley is a physical defenseman with good size and offensive upside; he is the son of ex-NHL'er Glen Wesley and the nephew of ex-NHL'er Blake Wesley.

With the final three picks in this mock draft, we added a pair of centers from the QMJHL and a goaltender from Florissant who is playing in the NAHL. Jan Mandat and Kris Hodge are players of similar size who will add bottom six depth to the organization's roster of centers, and Drew Vogler joins earlier pick Ville Husso in restocking the organization's goaltending pipeline. Vogler is committed to Merrimack College (Hockey East) for next season.
