Pietrangelo Cracks Top 10 Defensemen in NHL

It’s no secret Alex Pietrangelo, the Blues first-round, fourth-overall pick in 2008, is a great blue-liner. He has seen himself taking on large roles for St. Louis during power plays and penalty kills. In five-on-five, five-on-four, four-on-five and so on situations he continues to shine on both ends of the ice.

In a fascinating article published by’s Apron Basu depicting the NHL’s top 14 defensemen in 2014-15, he ranks Alex Pietrangelo seventh overall. "Pietrangelo is, in a sense, the ideal defenseman because he does everything well" he said, while adding "He is not the best in the NHL in any given category or skill, but he’s very close to the top in just about all of them."

Among defensemen last season, Petro finished second in shifts per game, fifth with 43 assists, seventh with 51 points, eight with 25:21 total ice time per game, and he landed inside the top-15 for plus/minus, blocked shots and power play assists. It’s also worth noting, Petro dressed in 81 games while, only, 23 defensemen played in all 82.

The King City, Ontario native has also been named by EAsports at 31st overall in the NHL 15 player ratings. David Backes was the only other Blue to crack the top-50 at 38th, respectively.
