ROSEMONT, IL --- Yannick Veilleux’s goal with 8:20 to play snapped a tie as the Chicago Wolves earned a 3-1 victory over the Manitoba Moose on Friday night at Allstate Arena.Forward Zach O’Brien scored the game’s first goal and Pat Cannone added an empty-net score late as the Wolves (4-1-0-1) regained a share of first place in the AHL’s Central Division.
"We played a pretty smart game," said Wolves head coach John Anderson. "We only allowed them 18 shots. I thought defensively we were good. We had a really good third period."
The Wolves’ power-play unit opened the scoring at 9:16 of the second period on O’Brien’s first goal for Chicago. Ivan Barbashev sent a pass from the right half-wall to Jeremy Welsh, who was set up just outside of the crease. Welsh dished a no-look backhand pass toward the bottom of the left circle for O’Brien, who buried the shot past Connor Hellebuyck.
Manitoba (1-5-1-1) pulled even at 1:28 of the third period as the Moose claimed an errant pass at center ice and right wing Austen Brassard finished a breakaway with a tap between goaltender Jordan Binnington’s skates.
Chicago seized the lead for good on Veilleux’s goal at 11:40 of the third. Konrad Abeltshauser launched a slap shot from the left point that Jordan Caron tipped toward the goal. Hellebuyck rejected the deflection, but Veilleux was ready on the doorstep to chip the rebound home for a 2-1 lead.
PAW PRINTS: Barbashev has moved up t0 13th among rookie scorers in the AHL with a 2-4-6 scoring line in his first six games ... MOLINE, IL --- Kellen Jones piled up four points by scoring one goal and assisting on three others and Tyler Barnes scored once and added two assists as the host Missouri Mavericks (5-1-0) defeated the Quad City Mallards (3-2-1) 5-2 Tuesday night.
The Mavericks took control by building a 3-0 lead in the second period. Loic Leduc kick-started the Missouri onslaught just 27 seconds into the second by burying the game's first goal from the slot. The Mavericks stretched the lead with back-to-back power play goals. Barnes buried Jesse Root's cross-crease pass to double the gap at 11:50 of the second. At 14:24, Sebastien Sylvestre scored the third Maverick goal from the top of the right wing circle.
The Mallards were shorthanded when Zach Pochiro rifled in a rebound to make the score 4-2 at 11:08 of the third, but the Mallards would get no closer even after pulling Hoffman late in the third for an extra attacker. Instead Root capped off the victory for the Mavericks by scoring into an empty net with just five seconds remaining.

NORFOLK, VA --- Alexis Loiseau- who had scored twice in regulation- and Steven Whitney scored shootout goals as the host Norfolk Admirals (2-4-0) survived for a 3-2 shootout win after the Quad City Mallards (3-2-2) rallied with goals late in regulation from Olivier Archambault and Guillaume Gelinas but had to settle for one point Friday night.
The Mallards spent most of the night battling from behind. The Admirals first took the lead when Loiseau converted Greg Chase's centering pass at 12:44 of the first period. Loiseau struck again from the right wing circle at 6:28 of the second period.
Late in the third period, it seemed the Admirals would have no need of the shootout to secure two points but Archambault kick-started the Mallard comeback by tipping in a power play goal at 14:59 of the third. With just a minute left in regulation, Gelinas- who had assisted on Archambault's strike- fired home an Archambault centering pass home to even the score. The five minute overtime that followed brought ample chances at both ends but did not produce a winning goal.

WHEELING, WV --- Sahir Gill and Riley Brace scored in the first period and the host Wheeling Nailers (4-2-0) went on to defeat the Quad City Mallards (3-3-2) 2-1 Friday night.

With just 6.5 seconds left in the first, Brace doubled the Wheeling lead with what proved to be the game winner from the right wing circle.
DUCK TALES: Pochiro took the Mallards' first shootout attempt vs. Norfolk, but did not convert ... Of the ten total goals scored by the Mallards this week, Pochiro (2 G, 3 A) and Tesink (0 G, 2 A) figured on half of them, with both Blues' prospects assisting on Tanner Eberle's second goal of the night vs. Wichita, and Tesink and Eberle earning helpers on Pichiro's third-period power play tally to close the scoring.
