When a guy's locker is cleaned out after being put on waivers, but before being claimed, it's usually a good sign that his tenure with the team that he's on is done. Scott Gomez's locker is spotless.
Gomez, signed as a PTO this off-season, was key for the Blues as injuries mounted up. As players like Paul Stastny and Robby Fabbri healed, Gomez's ice time became more limited and more rare. Kyle Brodziak is slated for a return to the line-up on the fourth line this week, and Patrik Berglund has been cleared for contact. Bergie's return makes for a log-jam up front; it stands to reason that the guy who hasn't been a regular in the lineup over the past month would be the one to be waived.
Gomez, after initial success, hasn't had much here, but his influence on the team was - to hear the players and Ken Hitchcock put it - invaluable. The 36 year old forward is on a two-way deal, but it remains to be seen if he reports to the Chicago Wolves, if someone claims him, or if he calls it quits on a solid NHL career.
