Coach Ken Hitchcock had been hinting that the next round of cuts had been coming, and today they did, sending 19 prospects to the Chicago Wolves and ending the tryouts of five others. From the Blues' official website:
St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the club has assigned 14 players to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.
Players assigned to Chicago are forwards Cody Beach, Pat Cannone, Jaedon Descheneau, Jacob Doty, Justin Hodgman, Danny Kristo, Zach Pochiro, Ryan Tesink and Yannick Veilleux, as well as defensemen Konrad Abeltshauser, Jordan Schmaltz and Tommy Vannelli, and goaltenders Jordan Binnington and Niklas Lundstrom.
In addition, the Blues released defensemen Stu Bickel and forwards Spencer Asuchak, Evan Trupp, Eriah Hayes and Zach O'Brien from their professional tryouts.
This leaves 33 players remaining in training camp.
Schmaltz (25th overall, 2012 draft) and Vannelli (47th overall, 2013 draft) should bolster the Wolves' defense. Pheonix Copley is set up back up Jake Allen tonight in Chicago, but Binnington going down first may signal a little bit of a goaltending duel in Chicago this year.
