Andrew Shaw Suspended One Game, Fined $5000 For Homophobic Slur, Obscene Gesture In Game Four

The NHL got this one right. Shaw has been fined $5000 for the obscene double middle finger gesture that he fired off at the refs, and he has been suspended for one game for the use of a homophobic slur and will have to undergo sensitivity training.

Obviously, this is the right call. The NHL cannot be seen as the league that tolerates homophobic behavior, nor should it tolerate that behavior under any circumstances. This also removes Shaw from the equation for game five, which is an elimination game for Chicago. Andrew Shaw so far has two goals and two assists in this series, making him a serious threat to the Blues. His irresponsible actions may have damaged the Blackhawks' chances in round one.
