The Blues filled out a vacancy on their coaching staff with the hire of former Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach Steve Thomas. Thomas helped the Bolts to two back to back Eastern Conference finals appearances. Thomas' contract was not renewed and he was released by the Lightning at the beginning of June.

Thomas had been working with the Lightning in some capacity since 2010, beginning as player development coach and evolving into an assistant coaching role were he specialized in working with the forward corps.
