Blues Night One Draft Results

With two picks in the first round the Blues look to add to their growing prospect pool.

Last summer the Blues took a slew of centers and forwards, Evan Fitzpatrick was the lone pick who didn't fit that mold, he’s a goalie. With their first of two picks tonight the Blues select Robert Thomas 20th overall, continuing their theme from last years draft. He’s a center who plays for the OHL powerhouse London Knights. Thomas had 66 points in 66 games last season including 16 goals.

The second pick, 27th overall, ended up going to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Brayden Schenn. A 25 year old center who’s still very much in his prime playing years. Schenn racked up 55 points last year and will be slotted down the middle for the Blues next season. Oh and the Blues also packaged Jori Lehtera in the deal, a true “fan favorite” in St. Louis.

Speaking of fan favorites, Ryan Reaves is headed to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In exchange for the 31st overall pick and Oskar Sundqvist. Sundqvist mainly played in the AHL last year for Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. The 31st overall pick was used on Russian sniper Klim Kostin. Some see Kostin as a risk as he is coming off a shoulder injury and there is the “Russian factor”. But looking at this from a scouts point of view, it’s a gamble that could pay off down the road. Kostin has stated he wants to head over to North America. Whether that's in the AHL or for the big club. Regardless of the shared minor league affiliation with the Golden Knights, Kostin should make a splash.

What a way to kick off the draft weekend. More deals could very well be on the way.
