It stands to reason that most Blues fans, after being taken aback by a shockingly strong and shrewd draft day. would expect that Doug Armstrong wouldn’t do much by the way of free agency. It’s been a while since the Blues have made a major splash.
Then news came out that Patrik Berglund was injured. The Blues have options here - they can try other players who they already have at center - word is, they’re thinking of trying Fabbri there during camp - or they can fill this need during free agency.
Who are the top free agent centers? Well, Joe Thornton and Martin Hanzal are always attractive, but there’s that little issue of “having to give a ton of money to Colton Parakyo” that the Blues need to think about. Unless those guys are taking a huge pay cut, hold your horses.
The Blues, if they sign a free agent center, are going to have to go lower, like say a Nick Bonino type. Perfectly serviceable, perfectly not going to break the bank. But also perfectly taking up a roster spot come December when Berglund returns.
Whatever the Blues decide to do during free agency, we’ve got you covered here. Check back for analysis and news as free agency continues.
