Blues Vs. Blues 2019 Stanley Cup Final Game 1 Recap

Game Highlights:

First Period -

Jordan Binnington introduced himself to David Pastrnak when he denied him on the one time chance early in the first.

Brayden Schenn scored the first goal of the 2019 Final. Schenn got the initial shot on net, to which Jay Bouwmeester fired it back on Tuuka Rask. The puck bounced back out to Schenn and he fired it back at the net and scored to make it 1-0 Blues.

Shots on goal after one were 8-8.

Second Period -

The Bruins turned the puck over behind the net. Brayden Schenn, who already had one big point, got his second one of the night. He fed Vladimir Tarasenko in front of the net. Tarasenko one timed the puck into the back of the net and gave the Blues a 2-0 lead.

Moments later, the Bruins tallied their first goal of the Final thanks to Sean Kuraly and Connor Clifton. Kuraly passed the puck over to Clifton and all Clifton had to do was tip the puck past a sprawling Binnington. That cut the lead to 2-1 Blues.

The Blues penalty kill was busy tonight. The Blues killed off two penalties in the first. They killed off a penalty already in the second. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t kill off the second one of the second as Charlie McAvoy tied the game at two on the power play. McAvoy skated the puck back in the zone and shot it past Binnington. Alex Pietrangelo’s stick was unofficially credited with an assist on the goal.

The Blues had a horrendous second period with dumb penalties, and giving up 18 shots on goal. The Blues managed to get a whopping three on Rask. Three. I’m no expert here, but that doesn’t seem like a good way to win a hockey game.

Third Period -

The Blues were sure to bounce back in the third period and make this a good game again. Surely they were. What’s that? Sean Kuraly had time to kick a Noel Acciari pass to his stick and score? No way the Blues defensemen standing right in front of Kuraly let him do that. Edmundson did? Oh. 3-2 Bruins.

Some might say this was charging. Some won’t. Not that it really mattered because this highlight was pretty much what the Bruins did to the Blues after the Tarasenko goal.

Brad Marchand seals the Bruins 4-2 win by scoring the empty netter.

Blues were outshot in the game 38-20. They were honestly lucky to have only lost 4-2. Thankfully Binnington played well. The Blues however did not. The Bruins lead the series 1-0. Bright spots for the Blues tonight were the penalty kill and Binnington. Only playing 20 minutes is not gonna help you win hockey games. Oh, and if Vince Dunn is ready for game two, Edmundson needs to get a cozy seat in the players suite. Also, need to be more disciplined next game. Game 2 is Wednesday Night at 7.

All of us, because despite the outcome (as someone on Twitter pointed out) we all just witnessed the first Stanley Cup Final game in a very long time. (For some of us the first one ever that involved the Blues)
