The weather for this one might be chilly.

The 2017 Bridgestone Winter Classic between the St. Louis Blues and visiting Chicago Blackhawks made for a memorable hockey showcase. The alumni game was a highlight; the weather, not so much. Postponed a day by rain, the game was a foggy affair. NBC Sports more than likely were excited about the views of the Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium they would get out of the game. Instead, they got this:

Fans in the stands and at home were treated to a great game and a 4-1 Blues victory. The NHL was treated to a weekend’s worth of enthusiasm. The whole affair was a confirmation in the eyes of the league and Gary Bettman that the Blues were capable of headlining and hosting major events.

The Winter Classic was part of a renaissance for the Blues that included the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs and Final, the 2020 All-Star Game, and participation in the 2021 Bridgestone Winter Classic at Target Field against the Minnesota Wild.

Unfortunately, that game had to be postponed due to Covid-19, along with the first half of the 2020-2021 season. Thankfully, vaccination rates are good enough and the country is re-opening for Gary Bettman to officially say game on today during his annual pre-Cup Final press conference.

Don’t expect warm temperatures, only a warm welcome if you decide to travel. Opening Day of several MLB seasons has had to be postponed in Minny due to cold temperatures and snow, and that’s been in March and April.

The average high in January? Twenty degrees.

If you absolutely have to see outdoor hockey and don’t want to freeze to death, the league also announced a Stadium Series game between the Lightning and Predators on February 22nd at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
