The Blues only managed a small deal today, dumping 9th wheel Wade Redden. They traded him to the Boston Bruins for a conditional seventh round draft pick. Not a surprise, really. He was useful while he was here, then was replaced by Jordan Leopold.
Here's the Blues' official press release on the deal:
St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the club has acquired a conditional seventh round draft pick in 2014 from Boston in exchange for defenseman Wade Redden.
Redden, 35, dressed in 23 games for the Blues this season posting five points including two goals and three assists to go along with 11 penalty minutes. Overall, the 6’2, 205-pound defenseman has appeared in 1,017 career National Hockey League (NHL) games between Ottawa, the New York Rangers and St. Louis accumulating 455 points (108 goals, 347 assists) and 665 penalty minutes.
After acquiring both Leopold and Jay Bouwmeester right before the trade deadline, this small deal was about as much as I expected from the Blues. Would a forward have been nice? Sure, especially since the Blue Jackets decided to deal for Marian Gaborik. This just means that the Blues' forwards will have to step it up.
