Suddenly a wild Elliott appears!

Your Blues took on the Calgary Flames in a rare afternoon game at Scottrade. Brian Elliott would also be apart of the shindig as he gets the start in goal. Karri Ramo would get the start for the Flames. Your line combinations would look a little different today as Kyle Brozdiak would sit this one out. Steen, Stastny and Tarasenko would make up your top line. Brouwer, Backes and Paajarvi would make up your second line. Fabbri, Lehtera and Jaskin would make up the third line and Reaves, Gomez (in for Brozdiak) and Upshall would make up your fourth line. On defense Pietrangelo/Bouwmeester (Did you know Bouwmeester played in Calgary...) Lindbohm/Shattenkirk and Gunnarsson/Parayko.

First Period:

The Blues haven't scored an awful lot in the first this year. Maybe they should play more Saturday afternoon games then. Vladimir Tarasenko would make it 1-0 early. Paul Stastny would miss on the deflection chance, but Vladdy was there to clean up and hit the wide open net.

Tarasenko gets his 21st of the year. Gunnarsson (4) and Steen (20) would get the assists. Fast forward two and a half minutes. Colton Parayko shows off his backhand.

Silky mitts 55. It's Parayko's 6th goal of the year. Tarasenko notches his 14th assist. So not only did the Blues score first, they scored twice. The play from the team lately, I didn't know that was allowed. Very refreshing to see.

Brian Elliott. Still a Blues goaltender. Still making saves.

The Blues almost made it three (yes three) zip in the first. Alexander Steen tipped a puck into the net. It was ruled that the stick was above the crossbar so no goal. You make the call. It's not an easy one.

2-0 good guys after one.

Second Period:

The second period was a track meet. Brian Elliott and Karri Ramo both were tested. Brouwer almost made it 3-0 18 seconds into the period...

The penalty kill was outstanding once again today as the Blues would kill all four Flames man advantages. Elliott would be a big part of that as well. Here he makes an excellent glove save

The two goal lead is the worst lead in hockey. Jori Lehtera would make sure that the Blues didn't have to worry about said two goal lead.

Steen would hit a wide open Lehtera for his fourth goal of the year. Steen would pick up his 21st assist and Tarasenko would notch another point with his 15th assist. Blues looking good up 3-0. The Flames would keep on pushing though. Thank you goal post.

3-0 Blues after two. The scoring chances were even at 9 for the Blues and 8 for the Flames (according to FSMW) but Calgary was outshooting the Blues at this point 23-13.

Third Period:

Everything seemed to be bouncing the Blues way tonight. Until a goal by the Flames in the early stages of the third period. It was ruled a non goal on the ice. It was reviewed and changed to a good goal. The way the ref explained it was very confusing. Long story short it was a goal.

For a guy not getting consistent looks in net as of late, Elliott looked very solid tonight. With the Flames on the powerplay Elliott would deny a Mason Raymond tip in.

Troy Brouwer had himself a decent game tonight. Doing everything but scoring. I mean he hit a post, but that doesn't really count. Ramo would deny him on another one of his chances tonight.

Would have been nice to have one of those Brouwer chances go in because the Flames weren't done just yet. Giordano would float one past Elliott to make it a 3-2 game.

Another unlucky bounce for the Blues as that puck would deflect off of Shattenkirk's stick and past Ells. There was really nothing he could do about that.

Can't help to think that Ells was trying to get a goal on this clear.

The Flames would pull Ramo late. The Blues would hold and go on to win 3-2. Their third win in a row. Elliott's first win since October. They end the Flames 7 game winning streak. The Blues hit the road Monday night to take on the Flyers.

Three Stars:

Third Star: Brian Elliott (38 saves, turns out can win a game)

Second Star: Colton Parayko (1 goal, didn't need the hard slapper tonight)

First Star: Vladimir Tarasenko (1 goal, 2 assists. on pace for 11ty million first stars of the game)

Flames riding a hot streak into today's matinee

The Blues don't play many afternoon games, but today's one of them. Hockey seems to be made for night time, and the normal game-day routine for players doesn't really lend itself to afternoon games. Yet here we are, hosting the Flames today with puck-drop at 2PM.

The Blues face a Calgary team that is red-hot: they've won 7 games in a row, their best run since 2005. Last year, the Flames made a name from themselves by winning a surprising number of come-from-behind games. This year, the Blues have a similar vibe, with Thursday's win over Nashville being the most recent example. #RoarBacon!

What does that mean for tonight? It means that scoring first doesn't really matter, as both teams are confident in their ability to come back. It could come down to simply who scores last. Brian Elliott is in goal for the good guys, and Karri Ramo for the bad guys.

What is with Calgary and Finnish goalies?

Comment below, and call 'em as you see 'em. I will be at the game, as will everybody's favorite pastry royalty Mr/Mrs Donut King.

Let's Go Blues!

The Blues have come from behind to win their last two games. How much of that success is due to two individuals?

After a rough start to the season, going 8-14-2, all of a sudden the Calgary Flames are good. Really, really good.

Is it a smokescreen? Perhaps, but winning seven games in a row is next to impossible for the best teams in the NHL. For one of the worst to start the season to do that is something that has to be contributed to more than a fluke. Has last year's Jack Adams winner Bob Hartley started to work his voodoo again? It's not like this win streak has been against awful teams. The Flames beat the Central Division leading Stars Thursday night handily by a score of 3-1, and they began the streak by by coming back with a three-goal third period and winning in a shootout against the Stars as well.

They're also not content with their recent success:

"We haven’t done anything yet," Flames forward David Jones said. "We just got back to .500 and we’re one game above. That’s not good enough for a playoff team. We’ve got a long way to go. We’re getting there. We’re having some better games and we’re getting some results, finally. We just need to keep doing that.

"There’s a lot of hockey left and we can’t be satisfied."

Perhaps the Blues could benefit from playing a solid 60 minutes tonight. Two back to back come from behind victories is something to be proud of, but falling behind the eight ball to a hungry Calgary team may not be the best idea. This season has been one for ending extended Blues winning streaks against opponents; the Blues have won every game in St. Louis against the Flames for the last four years. This one may be the one that they have to work the hardest to win. Kari Ramo has allowed a whopping four goals in his last three games, and while the Blues' power play is clicking thanks to the return of Kevin Shattenkirk, they'll need more regular strength offense than just the perfunctory Vladimir Tarasenko Goal of the Game.

The Blues' goaltending has been solid against Calgary, and Jake Allen has been outstanding in his last five starts. After a streak of shaky play that was more on the team than on Allen, he is 4-1-0 in his last five.

The fourth line of Scottie Upshall, Kyle Brodziak, and Ryan Reaves played well Thursday night until Brodziak left the game with an injury. He will be replaced by Scott Gomez this afternoon, who is playing in his first game since December 5th's 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Gomez hasn't scored a point since November 12th.

The Flames are dead last in the league in both penalty kill and power play percentage. Their team save percentage is second to last. This seven game winning streak is a wonderful story, but all good stories have to come to an end eventually, and the Blues, who seem to've shaken off the doldrums for now, stand a very good chance at being the ones to do it.
