The Blues blow it late, lose first game of the year in overtime.

Blues Lineup -

Forwards: David Perron/Alexander Steen/Vladimir Tarasenko...Robby Fabbri/Paul Stastny/Ty Rattie...Magnus Paajarvi/Patrik Berglund/Nail Yakupov...Scottie Upshall/Dmitrij Jaskin/Ryan Reaves

Defensemen: Jay Bouwmeester/Alex Pietrangelo...Robert Bortuzzo/Kevin Shattenkirk...Joel Edmundson/Colton Parayko

Goalie: Jake Allen

NOTE: The Blues did some line juggling in the second. Those lines were:

Fabbri/Stastny/Yakupov...Paajarvi/Berglund/Rattie

Also of note, Kyle Brodziak, Carl Gunnarsson and Jori Lehtera were all scratches tonight.

Game Highlights:

After the 3-0-0 start, the Blues head to Vancouver for a matchup with the Canucks. Picking up the action in the first period, Jake Allen robs Loui Eriksson keeping the game scoreless.

Later in the period, the Canucks seemed to have scored after Luca Sbisa drove to the net. The puck deflected off of him and went in. By deflected I meant he kicked it in, (or so was ruled by the NHL) and the game remained 0-0 for the rest of the period.

via GIPHY

The second period went a little better for the Blues. Not that it was great, but the Blues were able to get on the board. Vladimir Tarasenko broke the 0-0 tie about midway through the period. On the play, Allen made a decent save at one end of the ice. Alexander Steen snared the loose puck and flung it to Tarasenko. Jacob Markstrom thought he had a chance. *Spoiler* He didn't. Tarasenko picks up his fourth goal of the year. Steen had the only assist on the play.

Moving on ahead to the third period. The Blues<strike> maintained </strike> sat back on that 1-0 lead until Bo Horvat broke through with only 2:55 left on the clock.

With the point salvaged, the Blues headed into their first 3-on-3 overtime of the year. It unfortunately ended badly for the good guys. Creepy Sedin twin number two scores (Get it? He's creepy because he's a red head. Also, have you ever seen this guy?!) to give the Canucks a 2-1 win. Fun fact: The Canucks haven't lost a game, but have yet to lead in regulation this year. That's a bold strategy Cotton...The Blues were outshot by Vancouver 26-24. Both teams were 0-fer on their respective powerplays. (The Blues went 0-3 while the Canucks went 0-4)

The Blues finally lose a game, but still ended up getting a point. Only the 2013-14 Blues have done that. (They went 4-0-0 in the same stretch of games)Still on pace for 81-0-1 am I right? The Blues head off to Edmonton Thursday for a 8:00 game against the Oilers.

No Jaden Schwartz, but no Ryan Miller. Which team will be able to keep up their unbeaten streak?

Well, so much for the triumphant return of Jaden Schwartz, but at least we'll get a chance to see the season premiere of the Ty Rattie Show. Rattie will be playing on a line with Paul Stastny and Robby Fabbri - Stastny has six points so far this season, so perhaps we'll see some production from one of the guys who needs to prove himself the most.

The rest of the lines stay the same as Saturday night, but Dmitrij Jaskin will be in for the injured Kyle Brodziak. This is the perk of depth: no AHL call-ups necessary. The Blues are icing a full NHL lineup tonight. The Vancouver Canucks, technically, are not.

Ryan Miller is injured and will not play tonight, forcing the Canucks - whose AHL affiliate is nowhere near them - to sign University of British Columbia goalie Matt Hewitt to a one-day contract to backup the backup Jacob Markstrom. Either way you slice it, the Blues benefit from Miller, which is more than you can say for his time in St. Louis.

Heeeey oh!

This is your GameDay Thread. Comment like you need some more coffee for these damned late starts.

Looks like Hitch will be up to some line shuffling.

So much for the hope that Jaden Schwartz would return tonight against the Vancouver Canucks. Schwartz, who will miss his fourth game with an elbow injury, made the western Canada trip with the Blues in hopes that he’d play sooner rather than later. It appears that we’ll have to wait until Saturday night at the soonest to see Schwartz in action.

According to Jeremy Rutherford, Ty Rattie will be slotted in on a line with Robby Fabbri and scoring machine Paul Stastny. Stastny has six points in three games; if there is a line that could get Rattie going, it’s this one.

Robert Bortuzzo is in for injured defenseman Carl Gunnarsson, and Dmitrij Jaskin will play for injured center Kyle Brodziak.

The Blues get their Western Canada section of the tour out of the way early.

Did you non-season ticket holders grab your Winter Classic tickets this morning? Me neither. If any of you noble, generous, smart, attractive people happen to have anywhere between one to eight spares that you're only looking to make a measly profit on, let me know.

For now though, the Blues are off to a great start to the season, with a perfect 6 points from 3 games against some pretty good teams and also the Minnesota Wild. Paul Stastny is notching points, the goaltending has been good, the special teams are chugging along fine enough, The only stumble was the rash injuries on Saturday night against the Rangers that saw Jori Lehtera, Kyle Brodziak, and Carl Gunnarsson all joining Jaden Schwartz on the injury list. All but Gunnarsson made the flight to Vancouver and Schwartzy and/or Brodziak may very well see the ice tonight. (UPDATE: Brodziak did not take part in an optional skate this afternoon, while Schwartz did. Take from that what you will.)

As for the other team on the ice, the Canucks are also off to a decent start, having won both of their first two games in overtime despite never playing with the lead vs Calgary or Carolina. The Nuckleheads are in a bit of weird spot, as their window for contention in the Sedin Era most likely closed before last season, but they don't seem to want to fully commit to a rebuild. Last season was disastrous in British-Columbia, as only the Oilers and Maple Leafs finished worse than the Canucks. They also finished 2nd-bottom in the league in goal scoring only 2.33 goals/game. No Vancouver player who isn't a genetic copy of one of their teammates recorded more than 40 points last year. And with a season long PDO of 99.3, it's hard to expect a bounce back big enough to make a significant difference this year.

Oh, and their likely starting goaltender tonight isn't just a familiar face. His very presence is yet another reminder of the Blues franchise ineptitude in taking advantage of the opportunities we've had and the many short-sighted roster moves that defined the franchise for so many years. Yes that's right, it's Mr. 5% himself, Ryan Miller.

But sister, you're much better off without him. Forget about the boy.

UPDATE: While typing up this preview, it was announced that Ryan Miller had "some tightness." It looks like we'll probably be shooting at Jacob Markstrom instead. Buuuut...I already embeded tonight's musical number, soooo...

TONIGHT'S PERFORMANCE: @ the Vancouver Canucks

CURTAIN TIME: 9PM Central - late one, ladies & gentlemen, so be sure to grab a coffee or two from the concessions in the lobby - just don't bring them into the theatre without a lid.

BROADCAST NETWORKS: Fox Sports Midwest (TV); 1120am KMOX (radio)

AT THIS PERFORMANCE, THE ROLE OF ___CARL GUNNARSSON___ WILL BE PLAYED BY ___ROBERT BORTUZZO___, THE ROLE OF ___KYLE BRODZIAK___ WILL BE PLAYED BY ___DMITIJ JASKIN___, AND THE ROLE OF __JORI LEHTERA___ WILL BE PLAYED BY ___TY RATTIE, WITH ALEXANDER STEEN MOVING TO CENTER___. (Schwartz and Brodziak seem to be game time decisions.)

CENTRAL CHARACTER: D Kevin Shattenkirk - Everyone's favorite trade bait is, if nothing else, raising his return value. The Blues have scored 4 power play goals thus far, and Shatty's been on the score sheet for 3 of them. He gets the puck going the other way as well as any defenseman in the West, and although three games is a teeny-tiny sample size when it comes to the #FancyStats, his +7.9% CFrel is the best among the team's blueliners who have played in every game so far. Sure, signing him may be pretty difficult, and he could theoretically fetch a mighty fine price at the Deadline, but be careful what you wish for, people. If you trade away Kevin Shattenkirk, you no longer have Kevin Shattenkirk.

MAIN ANTAGONIST: LW Daniel Sedin - I generally want to try to stay away from the usual suspects for this spot, but there's really not a hell of a lot else to get excited about the new guard in Vancouver. The scoring Sedin has already notched a goal and has recorded 8 shots on goal already, so as long as Henrik is still getting him the puck, Daniel is still dangerous.

PLAYBILL: Our Northwestern pals at Nuck Misconduct do a great job if you want to know more about this odd mish-mash of over-the-hill veterans and less-than-exciting young guns.

This is your pre-game hangout. There's a lot of pre-game to be had, so hey, let's talk about those pesky early games on that silly East coast that will probably be over by the time we get started. Who have you been the most impressed by so far this young season, and why is it Auston Matthews? And just be glad we're getting this weeknight Western Canada road trip over with now while it's still early.

Let's say to old friend Ryan Miller about three or four times tonight.

The Blues lost Jori Lehtera, Carl Gunnarsson, and Kyle Brodziak on Saturday night. Brodziak and Gunnarsson made the trip, though someone from the press box could easily be slotted in if the necessity arises. Lehtera, however, stayed put in St. Louis. Which leaves an open slot in the top six. With some shuffling around of position players, who could go into that slot? Hm.
