Strange things were afoot at the DrinkScotch tonight. From weird puck bounces, to short handed goals, to zombified creatures cleaning up our Ice. Somehow the Blues were able to pluck out a W from all of the madness, beating the Winnipeg Jets 3-2.

Recap Time!

Who are these Winnipeg Jets… doth thou have some form of crazy St. Louis Blues Kryptonite? Do they wear this Kryptonite under their jerseys? Or in their gloves? This was not the St. Louis Blues we have gotten accustomed to watching the last few games. This was a weird power depleted team that couldn’t get past the Jet’s blue line through half the game. The Blues Penalty box door was open wider then the Roman Polak door on Blackhawks game day. What's up Blues?! Cat got your skates? Did tiny alienoids come down and steal your talent with a weird glowing puck?

The first period by the Blues was stop and start at best. The Blues seemed to be on the penalty kill at every turn. There was no pressure and no flow through out the period, what little got built up fizzled out once that penalty box door opened up. The Neutral Zone seemed to be come the "This is where we Play Zone." At 6:36 of the period Brenden Morrow put the Blues on the board after a nice pass of of the boards from Kevin Shattenkirk to Ryan Reaves.

The lead wouldn’t last long. Morrow and Roy took matching minors for roughing and interference to give the Jets a 5 on 3 power play opportunity. In typical super villain fashion, Blake Wheeler capitalized on a very high rebound, tying the game up 1-1.

The second period carried over all of the horribleness that filled the first, only worse. Neither team could get a decent scoring chance. It was a deadlock, stalemate stuck in between the two blue lines. The Jets laid everything out on the ice, resulting in 21 hits for the night.

The third opened up with stronger play from the Blues. Transitions were better, and quicker. T.J. Oshie was on a mission. As I said on twitter he was filled with glorious purpose. #OshieDown isn’t just a popular hashtag for no reason. At 4:16 Oshie made a lovely little toe drag from his knees to get the puck to Alex Pietrangelo who had an easy time putting the puck past Winnipeg’s Ondrej Pavelec, taking the lead 2-1.

*Pietrangelo showed Oshie his appreciation with a nice little peck on the top of the helmet.*

The Blues would hold the lead for six minutes before Andrew Ladd would tie up the game with a horrible short handed breakaway at 10:27, resulting in another blown lead with the score standing at 2-2.

Overtime inched ever closer as the clock ticked down the time left in regulation. At 17:47, Tobias Enstrom through it would be a good idea to all but tackle Oshie along the boards resulting in an interference penalty for the Jets, and a power play for the blue and yellow. At exactly 19:00 of the third Mr. Alexander Steen would be the Blues hero, again, banking in a lovely rebound to put the Blues on top 3-2.

Let’s look at the positives of the game, the blues earned 2 points and Steener, "The Jiminy Cricket of your St. Louis Blues" is now the sole leader of most goals in the NHL. Scoring 11 Goals in 10 games. TJ Oshie is a damn good hockey player and should be feared more then he is because damn can he play at any angle his body might be positioned.

The negatives were glaringly obvious. The Blues were sluggish and they sure as shit didn’t deserve to win the game after some horrible turn overs and lackadaisical pressure. I will take the win but I will not take this type of play from my Blues. Keep tweaking, its only ten games but it is becoming a pattern here boys and it isn’t going to help you along the way, not in this league, and defiantly not in your devision.

Celebrate tonight, for Friday is the start of our first real test on the road.

Right there, right at the top of the goal scorers list is our own Alexander Steen thanks to a last second game winner against the Winnipeg Jets. Will he stay there? Who knows. Does it really matter if he does? No, but it's pretty nice to see. "Small sample size!" all that you want, this is a pretty special start to the season for Steen.

The Jets are getting tired of losing on the road; will the Blues give them just one more thing to worry about?

Claude Noel's team is having problems scoring. Their power play on the road is two for 20. They allowed two third period goals in just 13 minutes in their Sunday loss to the Colorado Avalanche. They're unpredictable, flailing, and in over their heads in the Western Conference.

Here's what Noel had to say about his team's 3-2 loss:

"It's getting old," Noel said. "We don't make the greatest decisions, we don't execute, and these are the things we lamented before. We were 0-for-5 [Sunday]; it cost us the game. They got a lot of shots. They have speed, but we created quite a few of our problems. Some of the stuff we did, you really had to give your head a shake. The game was up for grabs, and to me, we let it slip away."

You know what else is probably getting old to Jets fans? Reading some variation of that quote. SSDC - same shit, different city.

Fun fact - the Blues' power play is THREE TIMES as effective as the Jets', coming in at 30.3% to 10.2%.

This is your GameDay Thread. Let's root for a team that won't disappoint. Let's be thankful that there's no baseball tonight. Let's give our livers a break.

Let's not do that last one. Let's Go Blues.

A bit of fun diversion before tonight's game. In case you haven't noticed, the background on the Blues' official website switches every time you re-load the site. For a while it was David Backes and the "Spirit of St. Louis," and now they've added players and phrases.

Two of them could be warnings to tonight's visiting Winnipeg Jets.

First, Vladimir Sobotka's background:

Next? Well, don't open that door. It may be Roman Polak:

His dad might have played for the Jets 1.0, and Winnipeg might be his hometown, but he and teammate Ryan Reaves would love to get some revenge for the Blues' 4-3 shootout loss on the 18th.

Wow, that Alexander Steen sure is something, isn't he? He had two goals Saturday night in the Blues 6-1 rout of the Nashville Predators. His ten goals so far on the season ties Alexander Ovechkin with the league lead in goals. He has points in his last four games, including two goals against the Winnipeg Jets on October 18th.

Unfortunately, the Blues couldn't maintain the lead despite the first line running roughshod over the Winnipeg defense. David Backes netted a goal that game, and T.J. Oshie had an assist (and a token shootout goal). The Blues' top line is lethal, and the Jets are going to have to find some way to neutralize them.

Good luck with that.

Jacob Trouba is still out, and unfortunately so is Paul Postma who just discovered a blood clot in his leg. Tobias Enstrom and Dustin Byfuglien are more than capable of giving the Blues a headache, but Zach Bogosian has shown a penchant for own-goals recently.

Honestly, the Jets' defense is hit or miss. Either they clamp down like in their 2-1 shootout win against the Dallas Stars Saturday night, or they allow two third period goals like in their 3-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. They're playing with one day's rest after a back to back, and have had to travel in from Colorado. They should be tired, and the Blues should be able to pounce on them easier than the similarly "tired" San Jose Sharks.

The Jets are 1-2-2 in their last five. This isn't the strongest team in the world, though they do have the capability to surprise. It all boils down to consistency, and it's just something that they have issues with. The Blues might have issues in consistency within a game - it takes a while for them to find their focus on occasion, but this season they've been consistently a strong team. No one knows what to expect from the Jets from game to game, and that's not serving them well in the wild Western Conference.

After two less-than-stellar outings at home against Vancouver and on the road at Winnipeg, both of which were bonus-hockey losses, the Blues were the ones doing the smashing at "Smashville" last Saturday night, defeating the Predators 6-1, with red-hot Alexander Steen leading the way with two goals. Steen now has ten goals in nine games, the first Blues' player to reach double-digits in goals in the first nine games since Scott Young accomplished that feat to open the 2000-01 season. Previously, Brett Hull did it twice. The club record is held by Brian Sutter, who scored ten goals in the first eight games of the 1978-79 season. Steen, born in Winnipeg in 1984, will look to extend his scoring streak tonight against the visiting Jets as the Note seeks to extract a measure of revenge for the shootout loss in Winnipeg eleven days ago.

The visitors tonight are not the same Winnipeg Jets club that first joined the NHL in 1979 and are known today as the Phoenix Coyotes. The original Winnipeg Jets were birthed in 1972 as part of the fledgling World Hockey Association, formed as a rival league to the NHL. Bobby Hull and center Thomas Steen (father of Alexander) starred for the successful franchise. The WHA disbanded after seven years, and the Jets joined the NHL along with the franchises in Edmonton (Oilers), Quebec (Nordiques, relocated as the Colorado Avalanche) and Hartford (Whalers, relocated as the Carolina Hurricanes). Financial difficulties due to rising player salaries and operating costs forced yet another relocation, and the Jets turned into the Coyotes in 1996.

The Blues did not play the Jets last year as a constricted lock-out schedule limited regular season play within the conferences. Winnipeg was somehow slotted in the Eastern Conference, Southeast Division during the 2013 season. However, with a much-needed realignment in place this season, the Jets were moved to the Central to become division rivals with the Blues. The reason Winnipeg was in the East and Southeast was because prior to 2011, the hockey club was known as the Atlanta Thrashers. Atlanta was awarded an NHL franchise in June, 1997. It was the second NHL franchise for "The Big Peach", the first being the Atlanta Flames in 1972, who departed for Calgary in 1980 and are today known as the Calgary Flames.

The second go-around for Atlanta was part of a four team-tiered expansion including other clubs in Nashville (Predators), Columbus (Blue Jackets) and St. Paul, Minnesota (Wild). Each new franchise would begin play when its respective new arena was completed. Philips Arena, the Thrashers' new home, was built on the site of the Omni, the former home of the Flames and completed in time for the 1999-2000 season. Owned by Time Warner, the multinational media corporation, Atlanta joined the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference and played their first game in October, 1999, losing to the New Jersey Devils, 4-1. Captain Kelly Buchberger scored the first goal in franchise history. They would finish last and out of the playoffs, yet that enabled GM Don Waddell to choose Dany Heatley in the 2000 Entry Draft. Heatley would go on to win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's best rookie in 2002. The club also had an excellent choice in the 2001 Amateur Draft, Ilya Kovalchuk, who made the NHL Rookie Team in 2002.

The Thrashers franchise was sold in 2003 to local business interests in Atlanta by Time Warner. And then tragedy struck eight days after the sale. Heatley crashed his brand-new Ferrari in a one-car accident in which he and Thrashers' center Dan Snyder were seriously injured. Heatley suffered a broken jaw and arm and tore knee ligaments, but Snyder died five days later due to septic shock. Heatley's blood alcohol content was below the legal limit, yet his combination of speeding and recklessness led to criminal charges, which were later dropped. He received three years' probation and community service and was eventually traded to Ottawa for Marian Hossa.

Atlanta would not make the playoffs until 2007, finishing first in the Southeast Division. Led by superstars Kovalchuk and Hossa and a healthy goaltender, Kari Lehtonen, the Thrashers won 43 games. Former Blues Scott Mellanby and Keith Tkachuk were also members of that team. Unfortunately, Atlanta was swept in four games by the New York Rangers in the opening round of the playoffs, and from that point, things only got worse. The following season, the Thrashers lost the first six games in a row and ended up last in the division, second to last in the conference with 76 points. In 2010, unable to reach agreement on a contract, Kovalchuk was traded to New Jersey and eventually Rick Dudley was brought in as the new GM and Craig Ramsay as coach. Successful trades with Chicago added defenseman Dustin Byfuglien and winger Andrew Ladd. However, financial losses (reportedly $130M over six years), ownership struggles and poor performances on the ice led to rumors of relocation to Kansas City, Quebec City, Hamilton and Winnipeg. Ultimately, the team was sold to the Canadian group, True North Sports & Entertainment. A deal was finalized in May, 2011, and the franchise was moved to the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, re-named the Jets.

A Blues' victory tonight and another goal or two for Alexander Steen will make this a happy Halloween indeed! Let's Go Blues!!!

You'll be reading a lot about how this is the first time the Jets've been to St. Louis in blah blah blah. It's more recent than 1996, trust me.

The Winnipeg Jets have been to St. Louis in the last five years, I promise. As a matter of fact, it was almost three years ago today - October 30th, 2010. It was a 4-3 shootout win in which Ondrej Pavelec demonstrated his flubber pads and the Blues realized that normally he is terrible in a shootout.

Unfortunately, on the 18th, the Blues managed to be worse at a shootout (and maintaining a lead) than Pavelec, losing 4-3 in a shootout.

But I digress. These are the Atlanta Thrashers/Jets 2.0. These are not the Phoenix Coyotes/Jets 1.0. Every headline, every blurb that you read about the fact that the Jets haven't been in St. Louis since April 8th, 1996, is wrong. The only thing this Jets team has in common with that Jets team is that both employed Keith Tkachuk at some point in their history. Perhaps it's more accurate to say that this is the first time that a team named the Winnipeg Jets have visited St. Louis since 1996, but accuracy is for suckers.

Now that I've gotten my pet peeve out of the way, let's talk about the Blues and the fact that not only did they wallop the Nashville Predators 6-1 on Saturday night, but Alexander Steen netted two goals in the effort. He has ten goals in nine games, tying him with Alexander Ovechkin for the league lead. There must be something about guys named Alexander or something. Who nose. You want to know who else's scored ten goals over their first nine games? Brett Hull, the Blues Vice President of Fun and Suites.

The Blues' power play is back on top of the league at 30.3% after scoring on the man advantage twice Saturday night. They have points in four straight games, though both of their shootout losses (against Winnipeg and the Vancouver Canucks) were easily avoidable.

It's a home game with no baseball conflicts until April. Pay attention tonight; you might miss some high-powered offense if you don't. Don't forget to head over to Arctic Ice Hockey and say hi (and see how much longer the Jets' coach has before he's fired), and check back later for a Lighting the Lamp, a game preview that's not as awesome as what CrossCheckRaise has been turning out, your GDT, and a RBR recap that'll knock your socks off.
