The St. Louis Blues would need a shootout to decide the series opener against the Boston Bruins, beating them 3-2.

Let's Recap!

Tonight in Boston the puck was dropped by the former Boston Bruin and Hall of Famer Bobby Orr. Seeing Zdeno Chara next to Captain David Backes was a terrifying sight to see, I will never get over how fucking monstrous that man is. From there the size difference between the two captains wasn't the only thing that Boston had the advantage over the Blues. The Bruins had oodles and oodles of pressure all over the St. Louis Blues in the first period but for nigh teen minutes of play Jaroslav Halak was there. Tonight he earned the moniker of "Jedi Ninja Pimp" by making some pretty key saves to keep the Blues from falling behind.

The stalemate wouldn’t last the full twenty minutes however. At 18:20 of the period Boston’s Gregory Campbell would get a lucky bounce off of the post and take the lead for the Bruins, 1-0. The goal would not be the only one on the scoreboard for long. #RoyWatch was increased to 13 as Derek Roy would tie it up at 18:51. Some how the feathered shot would sneak past Tukka Rask, as all of Boston hid their milk crates.

The second round of twenty minutes would start off much like the first. Despite the tying goal Boston still held the momentum. The game grew in physicality as both teams fought to get a leg up on the other. Both goalies held strong for their respective team taking shot after shot, making simple saves appear to be highlight reel wonder-goalie like super saves. But the Blues would strike first this time. At 16:04 of the period Captain america and his famous tip would take the lead, 2-1.

Boston would take advantage of a defensive breakdown at 18:41 of the second and tie it up 2-2. The Blues helped the bruins out a bit on this one. Alexander Pietrangelo in particular was directly in front of Jaro blocking his view of the shooter, Carl Soderberg, who sent a very nice snap shot past Halak, glove side. The Period would end with a score of 2-2 and

The last twenty minutes were an intense an aggressive twenty minutes. Tempers started to flare as time ticked away and the tie continued to stand. The Blues and Bruins would trade penalties in this period rounding out the special teams to one power play apiece, but neither team would be able to capitalize on it. But it wasn’t for lack of trying. Both goaltenders continued to keep their respective teams in it for the win. There were seventeen hits total through out this period as the teams battled hard. There definitely was a playoff like atmosphere in the air. The Bruins made it hard for the Blues to set up shots by blocking the shooting lanes and making passes hard to come by. The tie would stand as the team went into overtime and then into the Shootout.

Derek Roy would be the hero of the night capitalizing on his extra innings shoot out attempt and giving the Blues the W.

The Blues' Eastern Conference Domination session looks to continue on tonight in Boston.

I like to not pay any attention to Sunday's loss at Washington. Why? Because the Blues own the East. A 4-1 win ovver the Buffalo Sabres may not necessarily prove that, but the fact that they're 31-9-5 against the East since 2011 and have outscored that conference by 45 goals certainly goes some way toward that goal. They've also taken the last five from the Bruins in Boston, which is made all the more impressive considering that since 2011 the Bruins have won a Stanley Cup and have participated in another Cup final.

Jaroslav Halak had a bit of a brainfart in the opening ten seconds of Tuesday's win against the Sabres, but he was solid the rest of the game. He's getting a chance to roll again tonight, probably against Enemy of Milk Crates Everywhere, Tuukka Rask. Hockey pucks are also apparently scared to go anywhere near Rask. He has a 1.61 GAA and a .946 save percentage.

This is your GameDay Thread. Let's hope that Roman Polak keeps that scoring touch. Let's see if Umlaut can slap another one home. Let's have more fun features where Sobotka calls Polak "soft."

Let's take another two points from the East. Let's do this. Let's Go Blues.

Did you miss The People's Show this afternoon on CBS Sports Radio 920? Fear not, friends.
Hello Game Time friends. I like to talk.
So considering I haven't been invited on the Beyond Checkerdome podcast, I was a guest on a radio station that actually broadcasts like over the air. I think it's fitting the program is called "The People's Show." If we're anything, we're for the people. Love the people.
This might turn itself into a regular-type thing for the time being. I know I'm supposed to be back on the show in two weeks. I think it went well. No, I'm not bragging. I got a comparison in between Ricky Schroeder and Alexander Steen. I brought some obscure information and a few chuckles. I hope. And I predicted an overtime game tonight. So that's on the record.
You can go to InsideSTL.com and listen to the archives or go directly to today's show.
Big thank you to Pat Imig, host of the show. If only I can have this appearance be my resume for making it on Internet podcasts. And any of you radio producers out there looking to book quasi Blues guests, I'm available. Available all the time.
Thanks for listening.

The Blues Have A Chance To Get A Little St Louis Pride Back From Beantown.

During a recent episode of "Beyond Checkerdome", I referred to this road trip as a "shit sandwich". We have the two really good teams (Washington and Boston) straddling a pretty crappy Buffalo. Not a shocker then, that the Blues had trouble with Washington, but was able to take care of business with the Sabres. Now, we get to that top bun of the sandwich - the Boston Bruins. Is it a kaiser roll? Sesame seed bun? I don't know.

Much like a teenager just discovering puberty, the Blues just can't seem to stay away from "measuring sticks". The Blues didn't measure up to Tampa Bay or Washington, but they've handled Chicago and Pittsburgh pretty well. Tonight is another opportunity to see how we compare with the best teams in the league. That is exactly what Boston represents. A win tonight would give the Blues bandwagon some peace of mind.

Boston is currently on top of the Eastern Conference, a 14-6-1 record giving them 29 points so far. They've been strong at home (8-3-1) and are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. They are currently riding a 2-game winning streak. Soooo... a strong team with momentum behind them. Stupendous. On Monday, they ruined Cam Ward's return to action by beating the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1. The following night, the Bruins ruined the return of Rick Nash by beating the Rangers 2-1. So, it suggests that we need to keep all injured players off the ice for at least one more game. Rest up, Berg-Dog. Take your time.

The story in Boston this year has been the outstanding performance of goalie Tuukka Rask. It's safe to say, the Bruins are feelin' satisfied with his trade from Toronto. He played in both of those back-to-back games, allowing only 2 goals on a combined 68 shots (44 of them in the second game). For the season, he's gone 12-5-1 with a 1.61 GAA and .946 save percentage. His dominance in net has carried the team, even when the team hasn't been scoring much. Despite playing 1 more game than St Louis, the Bruins have 4 fewer shots on goal, and 10 fewer goals than the Blues. They're also dealing with injuries, notably to defensemen Adam McQuaid and Dennis Seidenberg. Much like the Blues, the Bruins have their scoring in depth. They are led in goals and also points by Milan Lucic with 9G / 7A for 16 points. David Krejci is right behind with 16 points also (3G/ 13A). Torey Krug and Patrice Bergeron have 6 goals each. One of the more interesting matchups of the night will be in the faceoff circle: our own Vladimir Sobotka leads the league, winning 64.2% of his draws. Bergeron is third in the league, with a 59.5 % win rate. Also, it's been a long time since we've lost in Boston - January 30, 2001 in fact. Let's keep that streak going!

The Blues would love to keep up their winning streak in Boston, while the Bruins are sitting pretty atop the Atlantic Division.

Leave it up to the Boston Bruins to do whatever they can to troll the Blues. Not that they care, because they just view it as an iconic moment in their city's sports history, but the statue of a flying Bobby Orr out front of TD Bank/Boston Gardens/Whatever It Is arena is both terrifying and annoying. You can't make it through anything about hockey it seems without seeing the clip of Orr scoring that goal; now it's commemorated forever in bronze. It will never go away.

Let's face it. Boston's done a number on STL quite a few times. Twice this decade they've beaten the Cards in the World Series, and there was that whole Patriots taping Rams practice/beating them in the Super Bowl cheating thing too. But that's water under the bridge. The Blues are in Boston to take care of their own, modern day hockey business, not to right the wrongs of the past or to make up for other sports teams' shortcomings. They've won five in a row in Boston, they're 14-3-3 which is the best start in franchise history, and 20 games into the season they already have 31 points. They're one point behind the Blackhawks with two fewer games played. TSN/ESPN think that they're the number one team in the league. They're good, dammit.

Who cares about the past? Sunday in Washington was an aberration. Some Stanley Cup finals that happened what seems like a lifetime ago? Water under the bridge. This team has a bright future, and they'll keep proving it today, so forget about that statue.

This is your morning open thread. Check back later for a game preview from CCR, a GDT, a RBR recap, and whatever else strikes our fancy.
