Tonight the Blues of this season decide to hop in the the Doctor's TARDIS and get back to the present and stop trying to play like their past selves. It was nice. Thank you Doctor.

The other night:

Phew.

First Period

Tonight the St. Louis Blues came up against the New York Rangers. The slumping Blues finally decided it was time to wake the fuck up and get their tails in gear. They seemed to be a bit out of sync at first. Halfway through the first they were able to amp up the tenacity and woke the fuck up. It was also a treat to see a somewhat healthy Vladimir Tarasenko back in the lineup as well as Maxim Lapierre At 8:38 of the first period some Swede on swede action would take place on the MSG ice. Alexander Steen would deflect a Jaden Schwartz shot off of his skate and into the net past Swedish and Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist.

The boys in blue would continue to play hard and keep up the fast paced play in the game. They would up the hitting but would be unable to keep up with the shooting pace of the Rangers. Jaroslav Halak would keep the team in the game. He made up for the pretend game that happened the other night. The team from St. Louis would carry their good will into the locker room for the first intermission.

Second Period

The start of the second period was a continuation of the first. The effort was there and St. Louis continued to be carried by there pretty spectacular goaltender. The Broadway prima donnas continued to some how get shot after shot. They started to play a style of hockey that one could define as questionable or dirty. Somehow the officials allowed them to get away with it for quite some time before enforcing slashing. Late in the period, at 18:17, Rick Nash would capitalize on a defensive breakdown and beat Jaro glove side. The Blues and Rangers would go into the locker room tied 1-1.

Note of the Period:

Steen would be injured shortly before the goal and would not return to the game with a lower body injury. Updates will be posted as soon as we know more.

Third Period

The final 20 minutes would see the Blues turn up the tempo. Halak would continue to keep the Rangers at bay after letting in one goal in the second. He would be helped out during penalty kills as anyone and everyone was willing to put the body on the line to block a shot or take a hit to help their goalie out. Schwartzie was on fire tonight clearly being motivated by the "White Out for Mandi" event tomorrow night. He skated hard and was present for every shift and was pretty much everywhere on the ice. At 3:09, on the power play, Hometown boy Kevin Shattenkirk would blast the fuck out of the puck and get it past Lundqvist to take the lead squarely back into blue and yellow hands. Honestly blue and red just looks tacky together. Thanks for Shatty, Suck it New York!

The Blues are in a New York state of mind as they take on the Blueshirts tonight, and the Islanders on Saturday.

The Blues have won ten of their last 14 matches against the Rangers, but they don't see them often enough for that to mean much. Back on October 12th, they defeated New York 5-3, which is the score that the Rangers lost by to the Islanders on Tuesday. The Rangers blew a lead twice, but the tenacity of the Islanders overwhelmed them.

The Islanders, when they focus, have a very high level of tenacity. The Blues do as well, and they should be extra motivated after their 7-1 curbstomping at the hands of the New Jersey Devils. Jaroslav Halak is in net tonight, and I'm not a betting person, but I bet he'd like a bounceback game after allowing 4 goals on just 14 shots. I know my fantasy team'd appreciate that too.

This is your GameDay Thread. Comment here about how awful Henrik Lundqvist's Head and Shoulders commercial is. Comment about how well the Blues are playing tonight, because that's the kind of game it's going to be... right?

The Blues hope to catch a break on Broadway

If we can all work together, I'm pretty sure we can collectively convince everyone else that Tuesday night didn't happen. I mean, nobody was there to see it, right? ::sigh::

Well, if you're looking for a place to rebound, there are few places better than Madison Square Garden. According to the Yahoo preview, the Blues have not lost in regulation at MSG in 16 years. The 1997-1998 season was the first full season for Coach Quenneville, and the last one for Brett Hull. The Blues led the league in scoring, and swept the Kings in the first round of the playoffs. The playoff leader in goals was ... Jim Campbell? Those were heady days at the end of the century.

The New York Rangers started off the season poorly, losing 7 of their first 10 games. They were the first to discover that the Western Conference was a road to ruin. Now, just past the midpoint, the Rangers have 27-22-3 record and are 2nd in the Meh-tropolitan division. They are 7-2-1 in their past 10 games, and are looking to bounce back themselves, having lost a tough one to the Islanders. On Tuesday night, the Rangers got up 2-0 early, but eventually gave up 4 straight goals to lose 5-3.

Tonight's game will be the first one since the Rangers completed a trade with our friends the Perds. Darth Sather acquired Kevin Klein from Nashville in exchange for Michael Del Zotto. The Blues and Klein are well familiar with each other, and this will create some shifting of responsibilities among the NY defensive corps. The Puck Father had a good summary here, but I'm curious to see if the Rangers will suffer some defensive lapses while players adjust to the new teammate and new roles. I'd like to see the Blues take advantage of that, if they can. Alain Vigneault is no pinhead, though, so I'm sure they'll be well-prepared.

The Rangers are led in overall points by Brad Richards, with 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points. Mats Zuccarello also has 13 goals, but 22 assists for 35 points. The remainder of the top 5 would be Derek Stepan (9g, 23a), Chris Kreider (13g, 17a), and Ryan McDonagh (7g, 21a). Our old friend (and Canadian Olympian, I add, for no particular reason) Rick Nash only has 25 points, but that includes a team-leading 16 goals.

The Rangers have been missing starting goaltender Henrik Lundqvist due to the flu, although he is expected to be ready to play tonight. He comes into the game with a 17-17-3 record and a 2.54 GAA / .915 SV%. That is considered a down year for him, and some have even speculated that he's been hit hardest with the new rules regarding the size of goalie equipment. If for some reason he's not ready to go, the backup would be Cam Talbot. One of the best stories of the first half of the season, Cam has posted a 10-4-0 record and a 1.78 GAA and .935 SV% stat line. Either way, I believe they'll find that the Blues are too tough to die.

Final Verse: An early game, once again. Tonight, the opening faceoff is at 6:00 PM St Louis time. The TV broadcast is on Fox Sports Midwest, and the radio call will be on KMOX 1120 AM. The GDT should drop shortly before the puck does. Until that time, consider this your pregame warmup. Gather here, relive Oshie hits on Nash, ConkBlock's shutout of the Rangers, and tally up the money Sather has wasted on players over the years. Also, who wouldn't want Henrik Lundqvist at their home?

The Blues need to bounce back in a big way tonight against the New York Rangers after an atrocious showing in Newark.

The Blues should be well rested after a day of sightseeing yesterday. Just wandering around the Big Apple, looking at stuff, taking pictures, trying to figure out the name of noted national landmarks... the usual:

This is Schwartz's first time in the Big Apple, and the trip should be special for him. Not for the sightseeing, and not for the chance to play at Madison Square Garden. Tomorrow night, in New Haven, the Yale Women's Hockey Team is hosting a "White Out For Mandi" in honor of Schwartz's big sister, who passed away three years ago from leukemia. The game comes between two games against New York Teams, and Schwartz had to ask for time away from practice. Instead, the whole team gets a day away to support their young teammate. The Blues will be attending the white out with Schwartz.

"I think this commitment to attend the White Out for Mandi speaks volumes about the depth of the Blues organization," Carol Schwartz said. "This is a true reflection of the heart and soul of the Blues family -- a family that drafted Jaden knowing full well that during the draft Jaden’s heart, mind and soul were in the midst of the greatest tragedy he would probably ever face. A family that stood by him, that supported him throughout, that provided him with opportunities when the time was right and now a family that will stand by him as he for the first time walks into Ingalls Rink and skates in the arena that his sister Mandi so loved and cherished."

The support that this organization has for each other is impressive. Tonight is time to show a different, more superficial kind of support. Goal support. Defensive support. Showing up to play. Showing the fanbase that the slump is over.

This is your morning open thread. Check back for a CCR preview, your GDT and hopefully a happier RBR recap (though the .gifs were priceless). Until the preview drops, head over to Blueshirt Banter and introduce yourself.
