By this point, every single one of us has seen the hit that Brent Seabrook laid on David Backes yesterday afternoon. The team hasn't released information on the captain yet, but post-game Ken Hitchcock said he was "not good." That's putting it lightly, considering he probably couldn't tell you his own name after the hit.

We all saw the NBC broadcast, or most of us did. Here's the hit from the CBC, and I want you to pay attention to the after-hit scrum. Listen closely (at about 45 seconds into the video).

You can clearly hear someone say "wakey wakey, Backey - wakey wakey!" while Backes is wobbling about. Who was it? Greg Wyshynski seems to think that it was Duncan Keith, which seems about right considering, as Wysh points out, Keith's mouth is moving.

So, you have a guy who is pretty obviously knocked for a loop and who can't stand up, and someone else laughing at him. I get post-hit scrums and fights have all sorts of delightful things said in them that aren't fit for broadcast. You can make fun of a player, his wife, bitch at him for going after a water bottle, all sorts of things that are not related to what one of your teammates did to hurt the player (on purpose or not).

I know the Blackhawks and the Blues hate each other. I'm not an idiot. You can still have a modicum of respect in the hatred. If a member of our team did the same thing to one of the Hawks, I'd be livid and mortified.

It's a stupid move by Keith, because it just serves to throw fuel on the fire and anger the Blues more. Yesterday the Blues channeled the anger into a win - tomorrow night, who knows. The Blues have a reputation for physicality, and I don't know if I would want to goad a team with Ryan Reaves, Steve Ott, and Maxim Lapierre into a pissing match.

The Blackhawks tend to lose their game when they try to play with a mean edge, though. So you know what? Goad away.

Rd 1: Game II Recap

Today Blues fans were privy to having the first game on the docket for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It was an early one;seriously I had to get up at noon. With the quick turnaround between games, many were questioning whether or not the Blues could sustain the momentum off of the thrilling game one triple overtime victory against the Chicago Blackhawks. The first period of play would answer such questions as the Blues came out strong. They would gain a key player on their top line, as TJ Oshie returned after missing game one. Blues fans were HIGH in excitement leading up to puck drop. The Blues were rockin’ and rollin’ against their division rival from the north. The Blues would take the lead early in the first period. At 7:08 Chris Porter would join the rush fresh off the bench and get Jordan Leopold’s rebound and take a slapper at an odd angle. Crawford would fail to make the save. 1-0 Blues.

The Blues would continue to hold oodles of puck possession time against the team from Shitcago. However, they would be responsible for four minor penalties throughout the period giving Chicago chances on the 4 on 4 as well as power play. The Hawks would fail to capitalize on any advantage and looked lackadaisical and down right sloppy. The Blues were a force to be reckoned with. Their goaltender Ryan Miller would make several key saves to keep the Hawks from gaining any traction off of a goal. Miller and the defense around him would look on point as the period progressed. It was an impressive display of hockey and one of the best first periods I have seen from the team all year.

As the period wound down the Blues continued to keep the Hawks towards the fringes of play and kept them from gaining any sort of momentum. With 2 seconds left in the first Kevin Shattenkirk would score as the Scottrade Center would explode. Jaden Schwartz would get his rebound on a last chance rush. He would take another shot on Crawford, but would again be stonewalled. The puck would find its way back to the point to Shatty would would rip it into the back of the net. 2-0 Blues!

The second period would kick off with the Blues on the power play for what seemed like days. The Hawks would take three consecutive penalties, starting at 1:42 when Patrick Kane would use his super secret power and gift from the Lord of Light to interfere with Maxim Lapierre. The period went penalty crazy from there. The Blues let off the gas halfway through the second period. Miller would do what he could to keep them in it, but could only go so far. At 17:25 Duncan Keith would catch Miller with a screen and rocket the puck from the point. 2-1 Blues.

The game would progress in tenacity as time began to tick away. As the period ended, tempers would flare up, players would get shoved, and words would be exchanged. The after-the-whistle shenanigans would result in matching 10 minute misconducts for Bryan Bickell and Steve Ott. Kevin Shattenkirk would end up with a roughing minor, giving the Blackhawks a power play for the start of the Third.

The Blues would struggle to get things going as the third period commenced. They were able to kill off the penalty that kicked off the period, but would fail to gain much traction on the resurgent Blackhawks. At 4:53, Fuckhead, Brent Seabrook would score for the Hawks. 2-2 Tie. A minute and a half later the Blues would fail to come together and take the lead back. At 6:39 Chicago would score and it seemed to be their game.

It began at 8:11 when a high sticking penalty would be awarded to Keith after he got his stick in Lappy's face. The Blues would take the power play but seemed to scramble as the Hawks broke up their play, easily killing off the man advantage. The Fuckhawks enemy dick head no. 2, Bryan Bickell would show off his best Dustin Brown impersonation by kneeing Vladimir Sobotka, at 13:55. Chicago started playing stupid and the Blues couldn't seem to find the sync to use the man advantage to get the tying goal.

Shit got real at 15:09. Enemy dick head no. 1, Brent Asswhipe Seabrook would put a high head hunting hit on the Blues Captain David Backes. Backes would crumple to the ice and not move as the maniacal dick head laughed while being pulled away by the linesmen. Steener would sling some obscenities and help hold his line mate up as he tried to get up off the ice and stand up for himself through the daze. The Blues trainer would help Steener keep the Cap balanced and prevent him from trying to go after Seabrook. Seabrook was awarded a 5 minute major for charging and a 10 minute game misconduct.

Backes would head off to the locker room and not return to the game. Needless to say he looked bad.

The Blues were PISSED. They were not going to go down without a fight and they sure as shit were not going to let the Hawks run their captain and get away with the win. They came out charging on their power play. It took them a little over 5 minutes to tie the game. At 19:53 Vladimir Tarasenko would fire a wrist shot through traffic and net himself another playoff goal. 3-3 tie.

For the second game in a row, the Blues would need overtime to win it. At 5:50 Barret Jackman would take a slapshot from just outside the circle, after getting a pass from Roman Polak. The puck would find its way into the back of the net as it trickled past Crawford. Blues WIN! The take a 2-0 series lead over the Blackhawks heading into Game 3 in Chicago.

Seabrook might've been remorseful after he thought about the hit, but he doesn't seem to give a shit immediately afterward.

The third period was not the best period of the game for the Blues. Two deflections wound up in the back of the net, Bryan Bickell knee'd Vladimir Sobotka, the power play wasn't clicking, and then this happened:

Backes was extremely slow to get up, and when he did he had no clue where he was - he tried to go after Seabrook in the ensuing scrum, but it was broken up and a very wobbly Backes was led back to the locker room to get medical attention.

There was no penalty on the play, but Seabrook was ejected from the game. He's never been suspended before, but at least a few games would not be uncalled for here. If the Department of Player Safety really cares about player safety, they need to get Seabrook out of there for the rest of the series, because the Blues are unhappy.

Game two starts this afternoon, which is a good thing if it's a game that's anything like game one.

The Blues and afternoon games don't seem to get along well, but I think that the playoffs make everything from the regular season a moot point. This time around both teams are on equal footing, with the same abbreviated amount of rest as the other - they're banged up, they're tired, and they probably could both stand a little bit more rest.

Tough shitsky.

Ryan Miller's first period jitters are hopefully a thing of the past. Vladimir Tarasenko is a one-man wrecking crew. The fourth line was the second-best line on the ice Thursday night.

If we see these Blues again this afternoon, and if they play a full 60 minutes, they may be heading up to Chicago with a 2-0 series lead. Fun fact: according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 3OT contest was the eighth time in NHL history the opening game of a playoff series went three or more overtimes. The winner of game one went on to advance in all seven previous instances. The Blues are also on a five game playoff winning streak against the Blackhawks. Let's make it six.

This is your gameday thread. Comment like you wish you'd spent $50 on standing room only tickets.

The Blues won game one in an exciting fashion - will they be able to close game two out within regulation?

Ryan Miller's cleared the cobwebs, it seems.

The goaltender, who has a reputation (like every other goaltender) for being a bit of a headcase, allowed three goals on seven shots in the first period. One was a deflection, but the other two were pretty savable had he've reacted to the shots. I was not happy when he started the second. He was a wall for the remainder of the game.

I love being proven wrong.

Ryan Miller woke up and turned into the Ryan Miller that the Blues expected when they traded for him. Maxim Lapierre saved the game. Steve Ott set up the game winning goal. The playoffs brings out something special where you least expect it. Did anyone honestly think that Adam Cracknell would have the opening goal?

The playoffs also apparently mysteriously heal. Vladimir Tarasenko was the best player on the ice last night with a goal, an assist, and nearly another goal had Corey Crawford not made his highlight-reel save. He worked to maintain game shape while he was out, and he may have passed the peak that he was at during the regular season. The entire second line - Tarasenko, Jaden Schwartz, and Vladimir Sobotka were excellent. Don't touch that line Hitch, whatever you do.

Hitch may have to mix up the top line today, though.

Sorry, Steve.

What do the Blues need to do to keep this afternoon's game from going to extra frames? According to former NHL head coach Craig Ramsay, they need to keep an eye on the stretch passes of the Blackhawks. I agree with Rammer, but as the game progressed, the Hawks' stretch passes got less and less accurate. The Blues could also seize on that opportunity as well if they have to - but it would be best if they just wouldn't allow them to begin with. They need to be aware of the other players on the ice, not just the puck. Chicago looks for opportunities that catch teams off guard. Be on it.

Will the Blues be ready to play after the longest game in franchise history Thursday night? Jeremy Rutherford talked to Alex Pietrangelo, and it sounds like the defenseman's good to go.

If Oshie doesn't play tonight, I'm still fairly comfortable with the Blues' odds. I think that fans are significantly more confident than where many of us were at before this series started, though keep in mind that the Blackhawks fell behind 1-0 every series last year, and the Blues...

You know what? Forget that. I like our odds.
